hehe, I wouldn't say no either Sparx, although I don't have that kind of money :) That said, Sony's ultraportables and the Latitude X1 are even crazier, so I guess it's all relative.

Kind regards

Hi soze

Yeah, they're very nice for the size. However, if it makes you feel better, apparently the keyboard sucks (little tactile feedback). I don't know about the OQO's keyboard, but it's equally expensive :(

Kind regards

Gigabyte are doing a OQO-esque UMPC now as well; I can definitely see the value in one of these small form factor jobbies (it would have been great when I was travelling), but they all tend to have sucky battery lives. At least now they're starting to go for sensible money (with the exception of the Sony and a few others); 18 months ago I looked at one of the early Samsung UMPCs and it was more expensive than their own (very light) Q30, which was a full specced laptop! They should all offer a DVD-drive peripheral as well; this constant (and wrong) assumption of ubiquitous wi-fi from hardware manufacturers pisses me off.

Finally some competitors are coming into the market, we might see a bit of competition instead of Asus dominating the super cheap ultra portables.

MSI have a lot of fingers in a lot of pies, but most of the pies are crap, their attempt here at a sub-notebook won't be any different.
Competition is good for us for obvious reasons, but I'm still very fond of the Eee.

you wont have to wait long aprently there are elcrapo lappys tha t look just like the eees but are much flimsy in some cases heavier and sound like a vacum. expect them to flood the market soon

Hi guys

Apparently the MSI Wind has gotten a decent write-up, and the Acer Aspire One seems positive too. Both are also priced aggressively compared to ASUS EeePC, which is good for customers.

Of course there are el-cheapo alternatives too, so be careful, and there's debate as to where this product category is heading (it was all about no-frills portability, but now function creep is setting in).

Kind regards

The HP one is out; its called Mini-Note, and I have to admit I'm quite taken with it; at £350 notes that looks like a nice buy (looks nice and well-built too). Maybe if I get my bonus in July, it can go on the list with the new DSLR, replacement desktop, bedroom lcd telly, 3G iPhone, etc. etc. :)

Hi DaGaffer

The Mini-Note is really nice, especially the build quality and looks, but its Via CPU sucks :( Even the most powerful (and thus most expensive) option is still not very good. There are some rumors that they will update to Via's new Nano technology (nee Isaiah), which is much better, or possible Intel's Atom tech. Hopefully by the time your bonus arrives, the newer version will be out.

Kind regards

Jonty

P.S. Your 'to buy' list is similar to mine, hehe :D
