Probably better than my iPhone which is over £200 and I must confess does get used for just that purpose sometimes.

Hi Wij

By all accounts the Eee PC is very good. For casual use, e.g. browsing the web, email etc., then it's great. The battery life and keyboard size mean you won't be using it for extended periods, but that's no big issue.

If performance matters, and price doesn't, then maybe hold off for the 8.9" screen version which is due out in a month or two.

Kind regards

Jonty

P.S. If price really doesn't matter, then the HP 2133 looks nice. It'll probably be around £400 or more in the UK when it ships in April, but it has a higher resolution screen, better hardware, and may ship with Windows XP as standard.

I am now very tempted by an eeepc, however the screen size is an issue. Also the nagging knowledge that for an extra £200 I could get a very decent specced full size lappy. Arghghghgh/

Hi Ch3tan

I don't have an Eee PC, but there are many in the shops over here in Taiwan. Having had a gander, the screen size doesn't too bad, but obviously the resolution is relatively low. This can mean horizontal scrolling on some websites, and having multiple windows open at once isn't very practical. There will be an 8.9" screen out soon, but the resolution may still be the same as the current 7" version; and a 10" version after that, but that uses a larger form factor for the case.

It's true, though, you can buy a 'proper' laptop for just a little more from the likes of Dell or whoever. It depends how important portability is to you. The Eee PC is strikingly small, and thus it's great for throwing in your bag and forgetting about it until you need it. The same cannot be said for 14.1"-15.4" systems, which need more thought if you're going to be out and about.

Kind regards

My favourite blogger uses one and really likes it. He's a journalist / Science Editor and has some entries about it. He does approach from a non-computer point of view though.

Played with one for about 2 weeks in work and have ordered one now with Linux it boots in around 15 seconds with a stripped down xp about 20. What i liked is it runs quiet so im going to throw a 8gb SD card in it and use it as a download machine. I think of it more as a gadget than a laptop though i did not think it was suited for long periods of use but internet on the train ect it is useable

Whats good is its almost a throw away in terms of portable laptops for staff. We are thinking of replacing our loan machines with these

I have one and love it to bits. It fits in my medium sized handbag so I can whip it out on the train.. connect it to my phone (yay dont know how I managed that but it works now).. download email, chat on irc on a bigger screen than my phone, do work stuff and study as the linux version includes open office....

I have also found no issues in getting it online in any hotel I have frequented since Christmas which is a plus the only think I would like it to do is to be able to link to iceweb the java thingy for work for some reason and I think it is linux related I cant get it to work, however like everything technical in my life it will eventually and possibly quite randomly.

It really is a fantastic piece of equipment for the money.

Can't people bear to be without an lcd screen for more than 5 minutes these days?

Hi guys

ASUS have unveiled an EeePC 900 at CeBit recently. They've increased the overall system size a little, but it now packs an 8.9" 1024x600 screen, larger trackpad, 1GB of RAM, up to 12GB 'hard disk' space, and (maybe) runs on Intel's new Atom technology. It will be released in the summer for €399 (£305, but probably more knowing UK pricing), but it's still good value considering what you're getting.

Kind regards

Jonty

P.S. Cromcruaich, I agree it's good to be switched off and have a more balanced lifestyle, but some people need to remain productive for their work, and others just prefer gadgets as a way to pass the time. If it keeps people quiet and happy, surely it's their choice to make? :)

P.P.S. Well done Yoni, I'm glad the wireless issue is all sorted!

Here we go again ... ^^

P.S. On a more on-topic note, the HP device above may also use Intel's new Atom technology and debut around April, which will give it an edge over the EeePC. However, the nicer styling and more powerful hardware is reflected in the price.

Hi guys

The new Eee PC 900 has some nice features without being too exorbitantly priced. The HP 2133 looks more robust, but it's shame they didn't choose Intel's Atom processors.

I would like one of the above systems, probably the HP, but I also want to go to Japan for a weekend break. The cost is about the same, so now I have a choice: be cultural or be a geek :p

Kind regards

Thanks Term, you're very kind (your money's in the post :D). I have a very fortunate life, so I try my best not to take it for granted.

Kind regards

Jonty

P.S. For what it's worth, I chose Japan. I don't doubt the HP would be more practical, but I really want to see the cherry blossoms and I might not get another chance. Live each day like it's your last, and all that :)

Cherry blossom season started on Friday didn't it?

Japan is my number one place I would love to visit, I need to get past my fear of flying because that is the only thing stopping me :(

Hi Trem

That's right, the cherry blossom is a little early this year, but hopefully I'll be in time (more Sakura information).

As for Japan, I really hope you can visit. I know it's a very long flight from most places, but I'm sure you can overcome your fear. Just focus on the great time you'll have once you're there. In the mean time, I'll take lots of photos :)

Kind regards

The Eee PC is very nice but I reckon the new one is more pratical with the slightly larger screen.

Personally I would wait for an atom powered micro laptop. I realise with anything related to computing you are always waiting for something. I think the Eee is a nice idea but is it really worth paying £200 odd to be able to use the internet from the bathroom?

If using the internet on the bog is not worth £200 i do not know what is :)

I though the atom processors had just had a nice delay hence the new eeepc being released without it?

Hi soze

I think the original idea was always to have a paper launch at Intel's IDF conference, and then launch in June once production has been ramped up. The Atom (and Centrino Atom group of technologies) have proved very popular, with Dell, MSI, Acer etc. all waiting until June to release their Eee competitors. One of the reasons the new 8.9" Eee and HP 2133 use Celeron and Via CPUs respectively is because they want to get a head start in sales. It's all business games, rather than the relative merits of the technologies.

Although I agree with Raven, you'll always wait forever if you're not careful, it does seem the Atom technology is worth waiting for if you're not in a rush to buy.

Kind regards

Hi guys

There's a slew of Netbooks being showed at Computex in Taipei today. Most have long been leaked, but there's now officially a 8.9" and 10" EeePC with Intel's 1.6Ghz Atom processor, larger hard-drives, plus 802.11n wifi and bluetooth options (and a wimax version waiting in the wings).

There's also the MSI Wind, which packs a 10-inch screen (1,204 x 600 LED-backlit), 1.6GHz Atom processor, 80GB HDD, and 1.3MP webcam. Obviously the prices are going up for these types of systems, but US$499 isn't too bad for the XP version (a $399 Linux option is coming later).

Personally I'd like to see Dell's offering, and to see if HP will switch to Intel's Atom or Via's Nano CPU. It's happy days if you're in the market for one of these systems :)

Kind regards
