What other alternative was there for games before Origin came out? the only one I can think of is Direct2Drive and Desura, both are not really anything like Steam.. so really even if they hated it, they had no choice ;/

I'm not saying Steam is crap, I love Steam, but I think Origin has a brighter future.. shame that people love to hate EA for silly reasons..

Microsoft Live I reckon EA will go down the same path Microsoft did.

I'm calling the people who boycott is idiots.

Keitanz, bandying around the idea that the definition of idiots are people intellectually principled enough to deny themselves the pleasure of a game because, in their opinion, the company who publishes it has bent business practices seems a tad, well, idiotic. :p

Capitalism is supposed to work this way. Don't like what a company does? Don't buy their products. (Of course, this doesn't really work in reality - because of people like you).

EA are near the top of a pile of offenders who don't really try to conceal what they're doing because they know the world is full of people who don't want to care if they're being exploited. They don't want to think about the awful things that are happening because it makes them sad when all they really want to do is play BF3. Even if it means they get "virtually" fucked in the ass by internetpaedocompany - as long as their ring doesn't have to stretch far enough to feel it...

And what exactly is EA doing to 'exploit' people that any other company, including Valve, isn't doing??

Go compare the two. Their approaches are very different. They're both corporations but ones ethos is more like an indie developer and the other is the monsanto of the gaming world.

I hate EA for silly reasons, like the fact that they buy decent small devs and rip out every ounce of creativity and replace it with the same shit year in year out, in pointless sequel after sequel.

Right so Valve is a big cuddly teddy bear and EA is a big evil faceless man but that still doesn't answer the question of what exactly EA is doing to 'exploit' people that companies like Valve aren't doing. By installing and using Origin how am I being more exploited than if I were using Steam?

Oh like ActivisionBlizzard and Bungie and pretty much every developer out there?

I can't think of the last game I played which was out of the norm which was made by a big developer..

I can't think of one big developer which doesn't churn out sequel after sequel..

Despite all the faults of Origin, they do give you a choise if you want to use it or not even if you buy a game through it.

Steam doesn't.

You are not forced to run a EA game through Origins, but you are royally fucked if you buy a Steamworks game and hate steam...

Really? You don't have to run BF3 with Origin?

I don't see the problem. If anything, I want it to be through Steam, as this way i can chat to other friends on Steam, join their match or arrange one, etc.

Steam has come a long way from the time it was a pile of wank. I was advocating against it at some point, but now it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Origin still has a lot to prove, but it will be very difficult, as it has a lot going against it. Firstly, EA (enough said), then Steam is already doing that business since like ever, and it's doing it properly and third, how do you get gamers to switch, when they have 100 games on Steam?

Origin as a digital distribution platform, is bound to fail. Sooner or later.

think it will go the same way as GFWL marketplace.. big fanfare from big company, then sell only their stuff, and do mediocre, but have money shoring it up

It looks to me like Origin has copied most of Steam's core features.. the reason why they made their own version though is a bit weird.. maybe they were annoyed at how much money Valve were taking for each sale.. or they are going to have something real special on Origin..

It's EA they think they are a big enough company to take on steam and win, the hubris is amusing.

So in conclusion to the thread title; EA claim it's not spyware...

In conclusion to the other discussion going on; Steam is good, the rest are improving, even though they're being made by eastern european dudes who don't have computers and are constructing it on a etcha-sketch.

Of course.

You can't honestly see a conversation like this?:

/punter: "Eeeeeeayyyyy. I was just wondering. Is your game spyware?"
/EA: "Yes. We track everything and sell it all to third parties but if you wanna play the game STFU bitch, k?"
/punter: "Oh, I thought you'd try to hide it better than that, like everyone else..."
/EA: "We don't need to, we're deep in your mum so it'll come out of your EMA either way..."

Yep. Seriously can't imagine any company in the world admitting they use any underhand business practice. Not one. Unless there's money to be made or saved from the admission - otherwise they'd just keep fucking us. So it's not much of a conclusion there Gwadien - more like a start-point for an argument...

they're claiming they're not using spyware, if they are using spyware, legal actions can be made.

They aren't explicitly stating what the software does / does not access though.

Jeesus. I didn't realise I'd posted in a thread about mental sub-normality.

If you don't like the above insult make your legal actions at me and see how far you get...

Yeah, just copy the normal game exe to the desktop and you don't even have to have Origins running.

Tho i was wrong on one thing, you do need Origins to play BF3 it seems, didn't know that since i don't own that game.. :/

But every other game (as far as i know i should add) doesn't need Origins to play.

Or perhaps they're not actually spying on anyone so they figured it'd be an idea to put out a statement saying that it's not spyware.

The bottom line of all of this is that Origin is bullshit. It doesn't deliver any added value like Steamworks yet is required.

Somehow I fucking doubt anyone on their XBOX or PS3 is having to put up with Origin?

I'm sorry but you could say exactly the same about Steam. What value does Steamworks actually bring to a game? It's not done anything to improve my copy of DX:HR as far as I can tell but I was still required to install Steam because it uses Steamworks.

It would be industry suicide to include spyware in their program. It probably has a load of bloated EA bullshit but I very much doubt they will be harvesting your details. Except the details you enter into origins ofc, which they will most probably use "for marketing purposes" and is most probably covered in the user agreement.
