DVD. Is it worth it on the PC? Or am I better off spending £180 on a cheap TV DVD player.

My monitor is a Iiyama 17"
My TV is a Sony 21"

Both are lovely...

Bit if a hard one there Mikey!

If you want DVD for films, then you're better off getting one to plug into your telly. Unfortunately, a lot of releases have extra content that can only be viewed on a computer DVD (dumb huh?).

I would imagine that more and more software will be coming out on DVD, so you might be advised to get one for your PC anyway

But be warned! The DVD/Telly option is a slippery slope (Just like PCs). The next thing you'll want is a big widescreen telly, then Dolby Surround, then a better DVD player...and on it goes..LOL

There's a couple of PC-DVD to TV transmitters around tho I cant remember the name of em. Try searching through some of the US hardware sites for reviews.

Mikey,

Grab yourself a Creative Labs 8xDVD-Rom with the dXr3 decoder card, then u have dvd on your TV (S-VHS to your sony) and a DVD-Rom to handle the next OS release from Microtoss (come on, 30Mb for win3.1, 150Mb for win95, 220Mb for win98 >1Gb for Win2k, it's on it's way

)

Oh, btw, the creative kit is about £120 from DABS (0800 558866), go fetch!

Get the Wharfdale from Tesco's at £179.99 (TV though). Its multi-region hackable .. so you can watch US movies.

With thanks

NO mikey, don't get a separate unit, especcially not somethin from a supermarket, geez... unless you want to spend well over £500 you won't get anywhere near the same quality, look the Creative kit supports true AC3 output, the S-Video signal is cleaner than any of the <£500 samsungs, a little .exe is all you need to hack it's region playback, with the dxr3 decoder card it runs like a dream on as little as a P200 plus the creative kit is far cheaper, u can't beat it!

As someone with a standalone 600 quid DVD player and a DVD drive in my PC, and also as someone who has seen a 180 quid Wharfdale in action I can wholeheartedly say that the stand alone units knock spots off of the DVD drives in a PC.

The 180 quid Wharfdale from Tescos is particularly good value with a cracking picture and sound with an amazingly simple code free hack, easier that an updated exe even.

As someone who sells them for a living and goes to trade shows etc. i thought i had to throw in my tuppence worth....
Go for the wharfedale at £180[if u r unsure read what hifi mags review this month]
I am guessing that u have the tv and pc in same room at mo, maybe ur at uni, but when u leave u will prolly have them in diff. rooms.
and will want to upgrade ur tv, stereo etc, The wharfe would start u off nicely.
Another avenue u may want to wait for is the playstation2[don't laugh]it has a built in dvd player and being sony should be of reasonable quality.Hopefully it will be remote control and will really kick off the dvd revolution.
dvd rom drives may cost next to nothing but the quality does NOT compare for film playback, both in audio and visual departments.
cheers brock
p.s danny howells...ooh buy me a ticket m8,
he is as good as sasha, have a good one m8
