DVD Recorders

I'm thinking of replacing my Video Recorder with a DVD recorder.

I was looking at the Sony-RDRGX7 http://www.digital-point.co.uk/model.asp?ID=397 and am trying to justify spending that much on something that wont be used much.

Was just wondering if anyone has a DVD recorder, and if they have any good/bad experiances.

Heh, friend of mine works for a hi fi shop and has got himself a Pioneer 3100 and i have to say its brilliant. They also do a 5100 model which comes with a 80gig HD.

Im going to get one to replace my VCR after just using it once.

They don't sell them new anymore, not in this country anyway. You could buy a Sky+ box, but I'm not sure how much or whats required.

Apparently the TiVo didn't sell that well, not that I can help there, because I got it for nothing from some guy who gave it to my Dad to return a favour (I nicked it off him). :)

Just do a search on Ebay, theres loads of em. You can even replace the HD inside with larger ones, for more storage space, although mine is sufficient at 40+ hours basic quality (10 hours best quality). You can set different programs to record at different qualities, for instance when I'm recording films I have those on best, for stuff like The Bill, they're on basic.

Betamax evolved into Betacam, and then into Betacam SP, which until a few years ago was the standard medium for shooting television programs on. Now its been pretty much replaced by Digital Betacam.

The tape shell is still the same size, but with holes etc in different places.

You can still find some Betacam F1 digital recorders in various recording studios, they used a standard Betamax recorder with a PCM encoder to record digital audio on a standard Betamax tape.

Make sure you get a combi Hard Disk/DVD if you can. I've got Tivo and it rules, and besides most of the stuff you tape you won't want to keep anyway and DVD-R (or RW or whatevers) are expensive. Good combi machines are around £700 at the moment (there's an excellent Panasonic in this months T3) but if you can wait until the new year the Sony PSX will be the piece of kit to get - HDD, DVD recorder and a PS2 all in one for about £400-£500 - looks nice too.

Sky+ costs £149 for the box and £50 install atm. Subscription currently costs £10 per month, or is free if you have a current subscription to any top tier package on the regular digital tv service.
Although on a plus note i get a nice shiney free one as a staff bonus in 3 weeks :D
