According to new laws today you can now face up to 2 years in prison if you are caught on your phone whilst driving, the same sentance is carried for "fiddling" with your sat nav whilst driving.

Also new "research" claims that being on your handsfree is as dangerous as drink driving!

Is it me or is this nanny state bullshit going too far. Whats next? No changing radio station driving? No eating? Fuck that, i think we should all pull over to wind down the window, it does take 1 hand off the wheel!

The UK is losing it, time to become le french? :m00:

good, fucking wankers piss me right off driving white vans with one hand firmly pressed against their ear. I think a fair punishment is to cut their hands off

Would you be of the same opinion if it was one of your family members crushed to death by a HGV driver who was playing with his phone, rather than keeping his eyes on the road?

What part of a phone call, esp with hands free stops your eyes being on the road?

If hes not looking at the road, its because hes a bullshit driver not because hes having a conversation.

I agree txting is a shit idea whilst driving but anyone with common sense can see that, talking however i find pretty easy to do driving.

About fecking time tbh.

YouTube - Sudar u tunelu
[youtubevid]3ty7j9yKBD4[/youtubevid]

Above is just an example...

Things like this happen when people are on the Mobile while driving.

Not saying the link had anything to do with a Mobile Phone but, on the news sometime this year a guy was on the phone doing 60mph in a lorry and killed numerous people because he didn't brake as he was concentrating on his poxy phone.

Sorry if I seem hostile to this but PHONES should not be allowed while driving FULL STOP...

Its not your eyes its your concentration if you think you can be having an argument ect and still be giving 100% attention to the road you are wrong.

And like people have said if a white van driver ran over one of your friend / family because he was on the phone would you walk up to him and say fing nanny state??

What would "research" get by "Claiming" handsfree is dangerous?

Now when you've come to the answer: Nothing, then go figure why it shouldn't be allowed.

I think its wholly appropriate to punish dickhead drivers who use a hand-held mobile
There's no excuse. The amount of cocksucking motherbitches I've seen who are not paying attention to the road cos they're yakking on the phone is incredible.

Didn't Mythbusters try this and find out that talking on the phone was just as dangerous as drinking and driving?

While quoting a TV show as fact is rather stupid, I'd most certainly imagine that it made a lot of scientists make a lot of tests to come to the same conclusion.

althought id normally agree about all this health and safety bullshit thats being slung at us from all angles, driving with a mobile phone is really dangerous and to be honest, i think that people that are so selfish as to be a complete hazard to other drivers and pedestrians deserve at least 2 years in prison.

if, however, 2 years is sentenced for fiddling with the sat nav etc, then increase the length of sentences for all crimes. e.g. murderers of jamie bulger being able to walk free with a nice new life in australia.

Driving while talking on the phone is as dangerous as driving and talking to the person next to you.

Both things takes your concentration of the road with the same ammount, just nobody cares.

I suppose all these people who defend driving with a mobile also think they can drink 8 pints and drive and think they can drive at 50 in a 30 because they are such good drivers nothing impacts how well they drive!

and then what? gona send ppl in prison for arguing in the car so they lose focus on driving to? or how about just sending ppl to jail for plain talking to the passengers.

coz i'm fairly certain ppl crash their cars doing that to.

Driving without due care and attention has always been an offence. This is nothing new.

no i dont. because u CAN just stop taking on the phone. u can't really stop being drunk just like that.

besides, i've been using the phone while driving for about 10 years and i have yet to even have remotly been involved in an accident.

using a handsfree its just like talking to a passenger. and even answering on the phone can be done without even touching it if u have a handsfree.

and you can even CALL without picking up the phone. voice calling is a woderful thing and i use it every time. ppl might look funny at me thinking i'm talking loud to myself but i dont really give a fuck.

i mean, crap drivers will crash and kill someone no matter if they used a cell phone or not. but thats just because they are crap drivers and shouldn't have a license in the first place.

And overconfidence always bites you in the arse eventually. The point is yes you can stop talking but its the extra delay you add to your reactions by having that chat.

This is not hard why do you need to be having that chat then, why is you speaking while driving worth the risk of killing someone? Everyone says i have used mobile phones for years and never got into an accient as i recall the lorry driver that killed the mum ans 2 babies said similar. If the increases the risk of killing poeple why is it worth it?

And i have a Handsfree kit built into my car and i have not paired my phone with it i tell everyone i will call them when i get where i am going. Or i pull over and call them back.

ban passangers, an definatly ban kids from cars, also no pets in cars, no winding windows changing radio stations putting in CD's eating drinking and especialy sratching unless pulled over

make sure ur wearing sunglasses even in winter or adjust your visor accordingly as it may not be ajusted while driving, no changing gear... obv.
no blinking or sneezing or anything else that may momentarrly close you eyes, no indepth thinking or pondering

comon people if we work toghether we can make our roads safe

Well, seems that my angle on the matter isnt popular opinion, i missed the mark on this one.

Some very good points been made and marc I sympathise with your situation and a personal experience like that would certainly have an effect on my opinion.

I dont condone drink driving and soze thats quite a generalisation, but nevermind.

Fucking moron

Great contribution there, backed up with some constructive arguing, fuck off.

Just to clear a quick thing up, i dont really condone "yakking" on the phone for simple conversations sake. Im talking about using a mobile phone to get told about a job, change of plans, tell someone about traffic etc. Useful information that cant be picked up when you finally finish your journey.

I guess I just think with all the crime that goes on for example 1 in 5 muggings in my area are solved, imo thats a lot more damaging than being on the phone for 10 secs. And i disagree with our limited police force having to push papers all day for people going 5 miles over the speed limit on an empty road. There are much more punishable crimes imo that go unsolved everyday.

There are also so many distractions in the car i dont see why this one is so controversial. No one bats an eye lid to scrolling manually for a radio station or changing a cd, which im sure you have all done and which DOES require you to take your eyes off the road. But I guess thats the power of the media.

Also, if its so dangerous to talk whilst driving, how come the police do it over the radio as part of their job. Taking vital information on addresses and crimes whilst driving, if thats not distracting I dont know what is. And yes I know its an unavoidable part of their job, but thats the same for other occupations which require information constantly over their mobile phones. Who do get prosecuted for it.

Just hope ive cleared up a few issues that i have with this hype over mobile phone usage.

Gotta say i agree with some of whats being said here. I really dont see a real difference between talking to the passenger and talking on hands free. Also i am not sure that it would be that easy for anyone to be prosecuted for using hands free kits as there is no logical reason for banning them imo. I therfore come to teh conclusion that its just another one of them made up think tanks people talk about occasionally.

Well when people come down so hard on drink drivers, even if they only had a couple of pints, seems fair enuff to treat mobile phone users when they cause a similar amout of risk. Although, I dunno why it needs specific legistlation for it, why is it not covered by dangerous driving legalstation anyhow?

Someone raised the point to one of the researchers involved, how is it different to talking to someone actually inside the car, and why is it more of a risk. Reason he gave, is that a person in the car can also read the road and the drivers situation and - without even being aware of it - naturally pause and hold the converation when the driver is concentrating on the road. On a phone this doesn't happen, and there are no natural pauses in the converation...when maybe the driver should be paying attention to what he's doing.

btw every tried RvRing in daoc on the phone? It's not happening :)
