With the recent downturn in the economy and seeing the benefits of staying in and doing what ever I want while here - mainly drinking when I see fit. Why is it that people still have this big hang up about people drinking in the house? Yeah, I am alone, yes I officially signed off till boxing day (sue me :p ) no I am not sad, yes I am enjoying myself and the list of it goes on.

Heads up guys, your turn to discuss....

Yeah but what about the stigma's attached to it, seems to me that people's attitude in the US and UK (dunno about other places) it's like worse than scoring some crack or crystal meth and doing it at home. People talk about narcotic use like it's something to be swept under the table but the aggressive attitudes towards home drinking imo are down right deplorable considering narcotics.

Also it seems that people have this tendency to see that if you are drinking at home then there's something wrong. Er what if to the same amount that you would be in a pub and not socialising but still having fun (thus you don't need a reason) it's still something to be despised, seriously this attitude needs to change imo. And no, no one has gotten under my skin about this, but after 20 years of drinking in bars and drinking everything there is under the sun and paying through the nose for it, and taking all the bs conversations that go on and on and on and on and on and on and on (you get my drift) that just by staying at home and doing the same thing, saving money and not having to put up with the heirs and graces of going out you some how contracted some disease you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy ><

Thus this is worth discussion.

I dont know when i drink i drink plenty (what woulb proably be termed "binge" drinking by most standards but hey most people my age pass this barrier) but i personaly dont see the point in drinking alone because i like the buzz of having people around but if you enjoy it who cares....you may drink alone but chances are i drink alot more on my night out and cause alot more annoyance and havoc than you do in your own home...I think there is a stigma because people are afraid of alcolism...im not sure what ive said makes any sense but there ya go..

CBA, hardly ever, almost nothing.
I'm not a teetotaller by any stretch of the imagination. I'll have a drink, but I personally can't see the point of it. I've got better things to spend my money on than renting alcohol. :D

I'd much rather drink at home - theres just far to many positives for me not to heh.

Don't have to worry about geting home after a night out, don't have to complain about the amount of water added to my pint, don't have to worry when I put my pint down, there's a plentiful supply of munchies in my house, and things in general seem funnier in the home when drinking.

Plus when you can by 4x the amount of beer in the supermarket for the price of a pint, theres not a lot of reasons to drink outwith the home =)

Mate of mine in LA says he's a recovering Alcoholic. Has not touched a drop in 6 years. I asked him how much he actually drank when he was an Alchi. He told me he used to go out every Friday/Saturday and get so drunk he often couldn't remember what he'd done or where he'd been.
Seems what we call an alcoholic in UK is far worse than in US. getting drunk at the weekend with a bunch of mates is hardly what I'd call an alchi.

Drinking at home alone is ok in moderation. Personally I tend to be a social drinker and only with friends and family.

I sit down at night, either in front of the TV or here working or surfing, with a JD and coke most nights. I dont do the pub thing as its never been a part of my life, and as Jeremiah says, you dont need to worry about getting home too

I'm not talikng about getting shit faced by drinking 10 cans of larger, just the one or two

Most people, women especially have a glass or two of wine of an evening, why is it any different with beer

As for going out in the week to sociailise down the pub, most, well all of my friends have families, so its not feasable by the time they have put the kids to bed and then eaten (probably enjoying a beer or a glass of wine with said meal) to go out, and then work the next day. I spend more time on the phone to my friends in the evening, or i might pop round for a cup of tea. I always found the whole pub thing too expensive and boring

Why not, if you can't get pissed in your own home what can you do. Ying and yang and all that. Sometimes nothing like cracking open a few cans and sitting in front of the TV for the night and/or having a session blasting out the stereo. Boring if you do it every night, like anything else.

Re: 'the stigma'. Of the handful of alkies I knew, either friends of friends or of the parents while growing up, would say 2/3rds did their boozing hanging around bars 24/7, not holed up at home with a bottle of gin. Although I suppose you could argue if they were, you wouldn't notice em. God knows how they could afford it (one did drinking away the inheritance from her husband who also killed himself thru drink). Anyhow, I think it's a bunch of BS drinking alone or at home in particular is the first step down the road to ruin.

Personally I don't see the fun or point of getting drunk on your own. But I am not much of a drinker and I've only been plastered once in my life. I thought that drinking was a social thing? I'm talking of the drinking to get drunk here, and not the odd glass of wine with your meal.

WFT is this??? I'm not supposed to drink in my own home now??

Bollocks to that!

I don't go to our local pub because I don't live close to any of my mates (who I see in London after work if I'm being sociable) but I do like to unwind after work with a few cans of lager. I'm at home with my wife and kids, watching tv or playing on the pc (which is in the lounge too), drinking and popping outside now and then for a cigarette. I don't feel hung up or alchie about it at all

Why is it embarassing? Are you like 15 or something?

Have the odd beer now and again. Not much of a drinker anyway but don't have a problem with drinking at home, why would I?

i cant recall the last time i drank to get drunk tbh lol, i got a bit tipsy on the anniversary (which was nice lol...what was even nicer was the cuppa tea B2 brought me the following morning lol) I brought a bottle of baileys for a christmas treat (B2 got remmy martel or whatever its called for himself) and I had 2 glasses so far, i also brought a bottle of whole milk which i am even more looking foward to cracking open and having icy cold milk and a warm mince pie this evening :D

I love drinking but mostly i love drinking juice, tea, sodas, milkshakes or a glass of beer/sherry/baileys/wine. My christmas "drinks" list consisted of:

ginger beer (lashings and lashings of!)
cream soda
orange juice
diet coke
whole milk (Mmm)
baileys...which'll probably last a couple of months tbh lol.

Well as some said, depends on how much and how often... :p The only day i start with a hut (shot) of Aqua Vit(ae) (swedish grain/potoe schnaps) is midsummer. Very rarely drink during the weeks only if there is a birthday or something, might have a few beers and whiskey friday/saturday.

But there is no wrong with drinking in oyur house, just do it with moderation :)

why not drink in the house? if you got a choice of going to a pub or trance where they play generic bad music and pay half your soul per every shot of a decent drink, after which you have to wade through the cold snowy/icy streets of wherever youre from just to get back home OR staying at home, enjoying a fucking great whiskey / cheap beer doing things you love or listening to music you love, and maybe hanging out with a good friend or two in a situation where you can actually hear eachother talking, why would you pick the former? only because you have a chance of getting lucky. but if you have other ways of getting lucky, it just becomes kinda redundant, no?

from me, full marks for drinking in the house!

lol I do believe young flea is on to something here!

I think this whole "its soo taboo to drink at home!" thing was actually started by publicans! theyre pissy because numbers of people going to the bars are dropping and in a desperate last ditch attempt to claw back some custom they are forcing people to feel ashamed for drinking at home...

Ha I'm on to you!!!

Drink at home all the time, either when entertaining or not. If I went to the pub I'd spend £20 on beer on a normal night. Spend that on a bottle of wine and I can get something awesome. Go to a restaurant and have the same bottle of wine, you could be paying £40/50 plus. And the pricey meal on top of that. Went clubbing last week and got through £80. Tomorrow I'll be drinking a claret from 1966 and it cost me £35.

Feck all wrong with coming home from work and having a few beers, people seem to think there is nothing wrong with stopping off at the pub for a few pints after work so what difference does it make? You enjoy a few beers after ya days graft either way :drink:

it's embarrassing because you're a grown man, sitting at home drinking alone to get drunk? i drink at home but why would i want to be drunk? there's a difference between enjoying alcohol while chillaxing but it's pretty sad to be alone and rampaging around the house proper drunk... getting drunk gives me a lift and makes me want to go out/socialise.. just makes no sense to be drunk by myself (don't know anyone that does that..)

Maybe I should've read over the thread a bit more before replying, but aren't people talking about having a casual drink in their homes, and not about getting shitfaced all alone?

No Laddey, there is something wrong with that one :twak:
I agree! I'll never do it.

But if i was to sit at home and have a few beers there would be a less chance of me driving since i have everything i need at home! :)
