Dunno. Stallone's was pretty shit (bar Max Von Sydow). Dredd + Anderson clear out 200 floors of a tower. Sounds like an episode from 2000AD tbfh.

Urban's gonna keep his helmet on apparently. Hope they don't make the Judges the "good guys" and show 'em up for the facist thugs they are.

The only thing that scares me is that they're bigging up the 3D. Dreddy was always about story, not effects...

Edit: Link to better quality version...

...the shot of Dredd and Anderson on the Lawbringers on their way is straight out of the comic tbfh. At least they're taking a stylistic nod to the original art.

Reading a bit more about it Alex Garland is producer - and writer. Could be a labour of love? Although I don't think much of the director - tho he has covered Omagh and Apartheid in his recent films so he's no stranger to police brutality.

Oh and the bad guy is the bird who plays Cersei Lannister. She's English and quite hot, if getting on a bit :)

Ah well, just have to wait and see I guess :) first impressions say its going to be shite but it won't be the first time I've been mistaken.

Ahhhhhh didn't notice tbh! I was just thinking to myself "I've seen her somewhere before" time to have a gander at IMDB to check the cast out I guess!

Stallone was made for Dredd it wasn't that bad not his fault the writer's/director didn't do a great job on a story, and Stallone did a fine job on the actual character.

This film looks okish just not sure on the actor at all for Dredd.

Stallone was made for Dredd

"I knew you'd say that"...

What a fucking gash film that was. Stallone could have been a good Dredd if the story wasn't so comical. Dunno how much an effect he had on that - he's hardly a massive facist in the story is he? Maybe he's like Harrison Ford and only wants to be seen as a goody-two shoes hero...

Humour in Dredd stories comes from the absurdity of a situation, not slapstick or sidekicks.

Again not his fault the writer's put out a shit story, as far as the character goes i thought Stallone did a good job with what he had on the script, this new Dredd just looks fucking queer.

Stallone was made for Dredd .

Oh. My.God. What a load of arse. Stallone was a terrible choice of actor and it was his decision to take the helmet off. The actual plot wasn't the problem (apart from Rob Schneider) it was mainly the dialogue that ruined it. (For the record, Dredd was originally modelled on Clint Eastwood)

This one looks...cheap. It could be any generic futuristic action movie.

Could be good. Dredd was never a fan thing for me, so won't be having any tinted goggleticles over my eyes.

Depends how much they go the gritty dark knight yawn done that route and hwo much pure action there's in there.

Not looking for a story, don't need one, looking to be entertained.

So a good story isn't entertaining?

Yeah exactly what i was saying (y)

Here's a more clear way of saying it; in regards to a judge dredd movie, i, as in me and only me, am in no particular need for a rich story with exemplary story-twists and character growth arcs, but am looking for guns, violence, general asskickery and corny one-liners.

It won't have much of that, any violence will be dumbed down to get a 15 certificate.

the new "no shoulder pads" look is workable..they are a bit cartoonish
and taking his helmet off kind of ruined it from a "lore" problem as you -never- see his face, ever.
schneider fell into the "+1 comedy sidekick" pit sadly...but anderson? really ? the mind boggles :\

Well, ignoring Toht's opinion on what a film about a comic he's never read and isn't a fan of should be (though we're obviously all grateful he's keeping up posting in every single thread, even if his posts are meaningless) it does look cheap Gaff.

But to be fair - with 2000AD being a British comic and Dreddy not being an all-american hero, and the shitness of the Stallone film, they're not going to have the biggest budget. They may be trying to do a Batman Begins style thing with it - which is what they should have done in the first place. Dredd is gritty and dark. Always has been. The first one should have been. And if it's shot in the dark they can stretch a low budget a long way (common trick)...

Again not his fault the writer's put out a shit story, as far as the character goes i thought Stallone did a good job with what he had on the script, this new Dredd just looks fucking queer.

I understand Stallone came on board and the script got changed for him - he took his helmet off, decided it wasn't funny enough (it was written by William Wisher IIRC - who wrote Terminator 2 - and was very very dark and humourless apparently) and insisted on more comedy being inserted.

Carl Urban, with the best will in the world, ain't the worlds biggest star - so that means you don't have to cater for his ego and can focus on story. Apparently they offered it to Bowie's kid (who directed Moon) and he liked the story but was such a big Dredd fan would have wanted to do his own...

It won't have much of that, any violence will be dumbed down to get a 15 certificate.

Yeah, but it doesn't matter really as long as the story's good. Would really like a decent Dredd film. (But it probably won't happen).

Anyway, over to Toht to explain why his viewpoint is as valid as anyone elses or to give us a witty "I'm not trolling" retort... :)

Why not? She's one of the all-time fave characters.

I'd have preferred something to do with Orlok the assassin myself ;)

See I thought that was one of the things the Stallone film got right; they made the helmet workable; the inverted "v" noseguard in the visor is a terrible idea in real life; you'd go cross-eyed, and the attempts to do a faithful helmet in this only end up making the helmet look massive; Urban looks lost in it. The Stallone film also managed to make the shoulderpads work (it was only the stupid codpiece that screwed up the costume design), whereas in this one, losing them and having the oversized helmet, just looks shit. Lawgiver looks OK, Lawmaster...meh, I guess that's actually next to impossible to get right; better the bikes in this than the hoverbikes in the last one. Biggest problem with the new one for me is that the likely plot doesn't seem to have any particular "Big-Meg" feel about it, in fact it sounds an awful lot like The Raid...

I've read it, i know about it, but not a fanboy of. The opinion is as valid as any other because it's a...learn this phrase...personal opinion of taste, though what Raven said is true, the violence will be severely lacking regarding the subject. It's not about me saying what it should be, it's about what i'd -like- it to be. Unlike some *cough* I can have an opinion that isn't a mandate for all to follow :p

Nice of you to speak for EVERY freddy though, missed the meeting where you're the voice of the people.

Do try not to be a moron in every single post you make.

having watched it again, if she is a rookie she should be wearing a white helmet aswell :(
the bikes are ok, they tend to be "enter stage left" anyway so its passable, the guns are ok aswell, but so many different styles over the years its easy to get one thats "right" and work/realistic looking

the big-meg feel i think is very hard to do right , it was part of what was missing from the last one, it was a-n-other big city really, but again this remains to be seen

I think this will be the biggest pile of junk since the turn of the century. But i've never been a fan of Judge Dredd. I think Stallone did a decent job in the first movie, even though the movie was horrible. But for the love of all that is holy - dont remove the helmet.

And now...

Just seen the trailer for Dredd.

For flying fuck sake it looks appalling (cue some wag making dreadful puns).

His helmet doesn't even FIT him.

He looks like a fucking Sontaran.

Gutted.

CURSE YOU TINY HOLLYWOOD TOILET!

Yes, I shouldn't be surprised :(

Couldn't find a YouTube link yet, so here's the Movienewz linky (I'll edit when I find a non-troll YouTube version):

To be fair, Lawmasters are on wheels. Big effing WIDE wheels.
There's not enough shoulder-pads, not enough yellow and not enough red.

All I saw was "The Raid" with guns and bigger budget.
