Drafting

There was talk last gulf war of draft papers being prepaired - how would you feel to being called up for service in this (potential) conflict. Europe is divided, more enemies than allies - but being given a weapon and being forced to pull the trigger?....

I personally find the whole affair worrying, but at my age I am still ellegible for a draft - i don't know quite know how i would feel - its still a reality tho, right ?

my brother's already in the RAF and, althought it sounds cruel, i'm glad he failed some part of his training. or else he'd be out there now. as it is, he's already guarding depleted bases as part of his duties.

Sometimes i wonder which of us two is in the most danger

yeah but think about it, a few thousand troops (god help us) blown to bits - where's the replacements - it's joe civvy aint it. The topic is not "it won't happen" - its "what would you do"

It could happen if it hits the fan.

(btw, i filled my wine glass up and got three replies, pld y'all!)

It can't happen. The most they can do is make you do is "perform alternative service" I mean, if you tell them you aren't going to kill someone, what are they going to do?. It's a bit tricky as far as the human right convention goes though. Just don't claim to be objecting on the grounds of being a Jehovas witness and be prepared to peel spuds

It could happen if, as i said the sh*t hits the fan - armies dont run out overnight (upgrade peasant to knight).

But in theories sake, what would you do ? Being faced with this little piece of paper that says "fight for Queen and country"

Like the others said, it won't happen.

Only 1/4 of our army is in the Gulf so there are losts more troops which could be sent if needed, which i doubt will be needed ;)

i dunno what id do tbh

im all for the war...

but i wouldnt fight....i just dont think i could kill anybody
i think people say they could, but i doubt a lot of people actually could pull the trigger if push came to shove

Well, its pretty clear then. I would pick up a rifle and go, seeing as that's what I had to do. *shrug*

Been reading about the First World War and my inclination is to volunteer as soon as conscription was announced. At least that way I might stand a chance of getting some decent gear and serving in a company with at least some experienced soldiers.

Seems strange, though. These days we live in a comfortable, decadent society where wars happen far away and involve people who want to fight. I can't imagine the old social propaganda of 'For King And Country' holding much sway over here. Most people nowadays are (generally) better educated or at least are far more cynical about government 'spin'

Government: Fight for your country!
Us: Hmm. What exactly are we fighting for?
Govt: Your country!
Us: Okay... But we're also fighting people that you trained a few years ago.
Govt. Well, yes but... fight for..!
Us: And what exactly do we gain from this? I have to be in work on Monday and my car won't wash itself.
Govt: You're missing the big picture. We've run out of soldiers and we have to fight.
Us: Whose fault is that? I'll tell you. Your poor management.
Govt: It is good and brave to die for your country!
Us: Depends on your perspective, doesn't it? I've paid a lot of tax over the years, so sort out housing, health and welfare and maybe I'll fight.
Govt: ...
Us: I didn't even vote.

I think the drafting officer would take one look at me and send me home.

If I got past that, then I'd certainly fail the urine sample.

During times of war and conflict my value as a human being tends to increase. Increase enough such that its unlikely I would be drafted. You see I'm a physicist ,I can design shit that blows up quite effectively.

If i ever got drafted i'd tell em to fuck off, i'm not gonna go fight a pointless war that we're only in cos tony blair hasn't got enough of a spine to stand up and tell dubya bush where he should stick his invasion plans

Too old to get drafted - modern warfare has little need for untrained draftee's anyway - if you did call people up they'd end up gaurding bases and other logistics rather than frontline stuff.
