That was patronising.

And why would you go?.. Do you honestly believe that you could serve a useful purpose? I doubt it tbh.

Govt. Well, yes but... fight for..!
Us: And what exactly do we gain from this? I have to be in work on Monday and my car won't wash itself.
Govt: You're missing the big picture. We've run out of soldiers and we have to fight.
Us: Whose fault is that? I'll tell you. Your poor management.
Govt: It is good and brave to die for your country!
Us: Depends on your perspective, doesn't it? I've paid a lot of tax over the years, so sort out housing, health and welfare and maybe I'll fight.
Govt: ...
Us: I didn't even vote.

That made me laugh ... Thanks! - can do with that with things as they are.

I always thought the age of who they could draft was pretty much dictated by how dire the situation was ... surely there's no reason why fit men into at least their forties couldn't be in the Army, maybe older, especially in support roles. There always seemed to be guys that age about in the old War films ... but maybe that's just cinema.

I couldn't imagine going, if drafted, in anything other than some sort of support role (peeling spuds! apt duty for a vegan :) ), unless someone was actually invading our county, but I imagine if people you know start dying in bombing raids or by suicide bomber, you start to have a different perspective that I can't really understand ... and hope I never have to.

Good point. Maybe that's the key difference between the attitudes in WWII and those of today. Not that I'm saying people were jumping over themselves to be conscripted 60 years ago, but Hitler was in Europe and heading towards our front door. Saddam is a million miles away and isn't actually invading anywhere - his 'evil' is largely limited to his own country.

Only monkeys get drafted. Anyone who can be any benefit in another capacity is kept where it's 'safest'. So I'll just chill with a beer thanks.

Most of you lot can pack your suntan lotion though.

Before the army started drafting ppl they would call up the reservists first, there's plenty out there, so don't panic.

FS I've always hated people who can't play the "what if?" game properly :p

If it came to Iraq I'm opposed to this war, so no I'd tell them I'm a cowa.... conscientious objector...

If it was a matter where our freedom was seriously at stake and I believed whole heartedly in the cause I would go...

Actually that "all they can do is reassign you to another task if you object" is wrong iirc. When the nation is in a "proper" state of war I believe they're able chuck you in prison for the duration of the war at least.

TBH I think if it ever came to us having to be drafted, something so drastic, freaky, scary and potentially devastating would be upon us that many of us would probably have already changed our tune.

Another thing the whole "I dunno if I could kill someone tbh" argument... heh well the human will to survive is a truely amazing feature... believe me if you got put in a kill or be killed situation you wouldn't give it a first thought let alone a second.

If they draft me we are in the poo.

However, [oldgit] in my younger days [/oldgit] I would have gone. If nobody fights for their country then we lose. If everyone had turned down the draft in WWII we would now be under a Nazi government. (Some might say we are anyway.)

If they drafted me.....

I've always disliked the idea of harming fellow man, but i think if i was forced to stand on a frontline carrying a weapon, knowing if i did not act first when faced with an ememy also armed - i would not see my family again. If i was in that situation, they would always be on my mind and my aim would be to return as soon as i could - performing the task at hand to do so if need be.

Id go if I had to, and despite your protestations so would most of you.
However Im 38 years old, so probably wouldnt have to.

Like I said, if I got the callup it would be to the "back room", not to the front line. So I wouldn't have a problem going. But if the war became cataclysmic enough that drafting was required (ie the army was dead), it's likely that it would have gone nuclear, so we'd all be fucked regardless.

Quite right Stu, in the case of a big war, ie the old NATO v Russia type of thing.
But in something like the Vietnam conflict, where the Americans basically just lost, there was still conscription due to the large casualties.
Btw, Embattle Im sure 18 is not the maximum age for drafting, rather the minimum ??

I'd go, no doubt about it. Infact I'd like it if they did have to conscript us, would mean I could go in the army without doing ALL the training, ok, I'd have to do some, but at least not all that running shite.
As for killing a 'fellow man', who gives a shit tbh. I don't know the bugger, and there's plenty of people I do know that I'd quite happily kill.

As I have been in the position of attempted murder on my own father I think I can safely say I don't give a shite. Owned tbh tbh tbh :p

If your idea of 0wning me is that you wanted to murder your father then yes I am 0wned. I don't know you as a person and probably never will do.

I do know that doing two tours of Bosnia and one in Somalia left me with a different picture of things.

I meant when it came to being in that situation and your assumption that I've never been in one, my point was that I had, my father was trying to kill me, so I retaliated accordingly, slightly excessively tbh. Admittedly it didn't come out like that when I made that previous post, apologies Xtro.
