So, well, my brother comes out of jail today and he will more than likely want to use my laptop. I've got shed loads of porn and pictures and so on and so forth and i really don't want him to see them because he'll embarass me infront of the fam.

So what i want to do is set him a user account up and only let him have access to selected files, programmes and so on. Basically not let him get into any of my files.

I'm using Vista so are their any programmes that are handy, or is there built in resources to do this?

Thanks once again!

Erm so he's been in jail and you're afraid that he will embarass YOU infront of the family? :)

Anyways, should be possible to configure a new user account to make just that. Or maybe put your stuff in protected files.

Oooh jail? What did he do?

Vista's user profiles should be able to take care of this if you put all you dodgy shit in a file and restrict access to just yourself. Or just buy an external hard disk and stuff it all on there.

He's been a naughty naughty boy.

But, at college they have certain restrictions, you cant enter certain files. You cant delete certain things and so on.

How do i password a specific file so nobody can get on?

not at home at the moment so can look at vista but i would think a right click on the properties of the file and heading for the security tab would be a good place.

If thats not available i believe you dont have to share your documents folder with other user profiles on the machine.

this is a way to do it :

First you make he's user account, then you right click on c: an go to security an add he's profile an deny acces to read from the drive, now he cant open the C:

Then you go an make a folder on the C: share it, an give him acces to read/write.

Then you go an map it as a network drive :)

he can use the programs from start but can not acces C:

Ok, surely there is a simple way of implying restrictions to certain user accounts.

As the admin i want full control etc, want it so he can have MSN and Internet Explorer, possibly WMP11 depending on how i feel. If he pisses me off i can block his account and so on.

Pretty much :) duno how it will work for games an application tho. maybe you will need to install them in that folder before they will work.

guess you can also do it with policys but if your not a computer geek that can be pretty hard.

then he will get acces deny when he tryes to open that folder :)

but i think by default he wont have acces to your documents an settings , unless he got administrator account.

I have an idea which may save you time. How about putting everything in a folder and right click on the folder and sellect - Hidden (If thats what its called). So when he comes to the PC all you need to do is tell your PC to show hidden files and you can see your folder you hidden.

Just an idea.

I'm currently doing that at the moment incase my girlfriend pops on the laptop and see's all the pictures in 'My Received Files' and goes fucking ape shit. I'll be pissed or stoned on my computer one night and forget to 'Do not show hidden files' and he'll see my stash haha.

Sweet, I'm gonna have a play about. Maybe i should just give him an old pc and wack it in the shed.

what is your brother in jail for?

Drunken thugs caged - Lancashire Evening Post
Thats the story, don't believe everything a newspaper says though. Trust me, they make is sound worse than it was.

They don't mention the broken nose or any other shit that my brother got, to make him react in such a manner huh? wankers.

Don't judge me for his actions though, i'm nothing like the guy. I might smoke abit of weed have the odd line and watch porn but i've never been to jail, i'd say never go to jail aswell, but never say never.

So judging by the date of the article on sentencing and your bro getting out now he is Jamie Robinson? Although that's not much of a sentence for attempted murder.

He's called Jamie Robinson yeah. He got arrested for attempted murder and charged with section 21 i think, wounded with intent. Fux knows, don't really get involved.

rather than me go on about your brothers crime, just use an encryption program for your "i dont want anybody to see this shit" folder....

axcrypt is free and works wonders

SourceForge.net: AxCrypt - File Encryption for Windows

on the other hand you could just act like all the rest of humanity now and ignore him, good luck with him getting a job/mortgage/bank account/life, i feel sorry for the bloke who got thrown out of his window, but your bro has done his bird so he should be left alone to get on with the rest of his life.
