Yeah, dogs rock all sorts of stuff over cats.

Was about to post a thread about getting a dog, suggestions, mut or a breed etc.

Probably going to get one from a shealter, just to give the girl a home.

On the subject, best doggie picture of year;

Touching story indeed. But not the same imo, as there is probably 100s of storys of mothers of different species sacrificing their lives to save their children(Instinct).

But seeing a animal saving another animal, when they are not related at all, impresses me more.
Got a story of a dog doing that? All this dog did was sit next to it :p

Actually it comes more from the fact that in olden days, big ass predator wolves fought big ass birds(think chocobo) and those chocobo ate our old old ancestors, little big eyed monkeys in trees :D

Also because brave wolves dared venture into our garbage dumps and as such, evolved to modern dogs, which we took as friends because they were very handy in war/hunt.

I am more inclinded to believe that is because they have a similar mental structure to humans, offspring matter to dogs, they care for their babies until they are almost fully grown. Then we have the pack mentality as well, humans have been social creatures since our time in the trees and we have always tended to live in groups but we also have a long history following alpha males just as dogs do. Even in modern times when you have a dog as a pet that rule applies, someone has to be the alpha and if you are weak with your dog then it will assume the alpha role and run you ragged. We do the same in our own family relationships to a certain extent as well.

Ofcourse the pack mentality is a factor, we couldn't have cats as loyal pets because they don't have as strong of a pack mentality.

If bears had been braver long while ago, we could be having a half ton rover named grizzly on our sofa :p

No you see your confusing cartoons there with Evolution, according to what you just said i wouldn't be here typing this :D

Dogs are as cHO said more like us mentally and have similar values, just because a dog wont eat its young as quickly as a cat doesn't mean its stupid it just means the dog isn't willing to take that moral step for survival (obviously for a dog it's not so much a spiritual decision as it is a matter of kinship to its fellow dog) cats hunt and kill each other in the wild for food in many instances canines don't.

Cat's are opportunists and they settle into the owner/pet relationship as they see they can get more out of it than by going feral, with dog's its more blind loyalty which might be to a point considered dumb but it's a trait we humans respect and WE are the dominant species not Bigbird so we have almost made a completely different class of animal from them (will this speed up/slow down or endgame stagnate their eventual evolutionary plan, who knows) I for one would love to see a dog evolved to our level and have a chat with one and i think in many aspects we could find that creature more civilized what we have become.

I'm not confusing cartoons with anything, those are simply facts ;)

The modern dog evolved from braver wolves. The reason it wont eat it's young is the same pack value that wolves(and other such pack animals) hold.

Cats wouldn't make much in hunt/war efforts, that's why dogs are our pets these days.

fixed it for ya.

Personally i think blind loyalty is a bad trait. It is what lets dictators get power over people many places, its what makes your government do stupid stuff and still keep them in powerm, etc.

its a trait i have no respect for. Maybe thats why i like cats better than dogs!

however, thanks for the link with the Terror bird, didnt know about this fella!

Yeah that's about the era i was talking about. Though think it was in a bit different time when the wolves were a bit bigger too.

Direwolves and Smiladon both died out though as they reached a stage where they werent able to kill enough prey to maintain their massive size, humans also shrank from an average height of 6'2 like 20,000 years ago to 5'7 or so thats what happens when all the mammoths die and we become farmers :p

We bucking the trend now tho and headed back towards 6'0

Shouldn't go watch dog videos on youtube since you ultimately, at one point or other, end up on a RIP video. One of the rare things that actually gets to me, doggies and especially lost ones.

So umm...f*ck you Punishment and here's a rep :p

Terrible film but Marley rocked. Also adore the dog in 'My Dog Skip', he was just like my own Jack Russell that I grew up with, broke my heart when he passed away 10 years ago. Hardly a day goes by when I don't think of him, best friend I ever had.
