There's a fascinating documentary on TV at the moment (Channel 4, UK) about a scientist, Aubrey de Grey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey_de_Grey) who has identified 7 biological types of ageing damage which if we can cure them, can effectively make human beings immortal. All he needs is 250 of the top scientists in the world and a billion dollars to achieve this.

Thought provoking stuff

Hmm, so difficult.

On the one hand:

Yes, being able to live forever would be great for me. Being able to practice things endlessly untill I was good at *everything* would be something I would love to beable to attempt. I could see everything, do everything and learn to do everything. I would beable to spend "lifetimes" doing every different career I dreamed about as a child.

On the other hand:

No, it would be a very bad idea. Being good at everything would (I imagine) become incredably boring. Having nothing to look forward to (because you'd done it all) would be soul destroying. It would take alot of the purpose of life away I think. As it is atm, life is all about savouring the moments, taking oppotunities because you know they might not come your way again. Its exciting, "living on the edge", knowing you've got a time limit makes life more about making the most of that limited time.

Death would no longer be inevitable so when it did happen how much worse would it be? Imagine losing someone close to you and having to live for eternity without them? People would stop taking risks, "what if i died?". Life would become boring because people would be so much more afriad of death.

"rather an hour as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm" is a saying that comes to mind, atleast knowing we're going to die anyway gives us the freedom to take risks, do fun, stupid, crazy and downright idiotic things. When friends die now, there is atleast some consolation that death is "a part of life", that its a certainty. Without it the death of someone would be far worse. I think life would be alot more boring and depressing than it is now if death wasnt a certainty.

Very thought provoking.

The only good thing that could possible come out of people being able to live for ever, is that they won't screw up the planet so much, and think about the world's future, rather than just screwing up the planet.

Although the over population that would happen would doom it anyway. As for me personally? no way, it would be boring as hell.

Like George carlin said, and i love saying this, "The planet's fine, it's the humans that are f*cked" :D

We can't do sh*t to this globe that it can't survive. If we don't blow it up that is. This rocks gonna outlast us all and only thing we can manage is to leave plastic around :)

Yes, deffo would want to live forever. No question.

I'm quite happy with the thought of kicking the bucket.

I'll pass on immortality.

Well i take this "immortality" as "indestructable".

So if the planet goes boom, i go flying.

Right?

If you can't die you can't die.

First thing i'd do is build me a bunc of robots to strap a huge f'ing engine on the planet and take it for a spin around the galaxy.

Sure, it might take a while to leanr robotics and build such a thing, but i got time :D

ild want to live forever, when i was younger, and still now i was very scared of death. I would often cry alot, and the thought of emptyness and my never ever having a thought process again terrifies me-massively so. I guess i depends partly if theres sumin after death, i wuld certaintly wanna live for 5bil years+.

To "cure" aging isn't the main problem though.

Even if they manage to cure aging, you'll still have the possibility of dieing from diseases such as HIV, AIDS or cancer.

To avoid aging ain't giving you invulnerability, it's prolonging(sp?) your death.

I wouldn't say no if they let me live for 100-200 more years or something (Depending on if they could keep cell-regeneration/stop the aging process) just to see what the future would be like, but no. I'd not want to live forever.

As mentioned, the sun is halfway through it's main cycle. 5bn-1bn years sun will go poof. End of 1/2 the planets.

i wuldnt really worrry about the sun goin poof, humans will destroy themselves before then or we will find the ways to travel to other planets. The concern will be when the universe goes poof,

maybe sum of u have read some Isiiac asimov before, 1 of his legendery books is called 'the last question' it addresses this issue very well. Worth a read for sure.

http://www.multivax.com/last_question.html

here is a link, a short story 30mins, i assure you it is well worth reading, it won multiple awards and is very thought provoking.

Why the hell would anyone want to live forever?

You are only ever at peace when you die.

If i were about to die, and i get asked if i want to live forever or die now. I´d pretty easily choose to live forever. Its the human compulsion. Why wouldn´t anyone want to ?
