As the title says, do they work? anyone actually have first hand experiance using them? or recommend any etc?

Ive recently split up with my g/f after a short relationship (only 2weeks it lasted) but it was kinda special, i felt like a differant person, was really happy etc.

Unfortunatly due to the type of person i am (im very shy, nervous, insecure) i dont generally go out to look for women, also huge work hours dont help matters :(

So i thought id try these online dating site to see if i have a chance that way.

Any help much appreciated.
Oh, and i await the piss takes for this :)

unless you love your self no one else is going to love you.

so if you dont sort your shit out and get your self out there, nothings gonna happen.

why did this 2 week stint end? because of the type of person you are?

if your looking for a shag and are half desent looking, and live "close" to a major town in your country, then sure they work.

If your looking for a GF, well I'd say best chanels are through acquaintances "friends of friends, parties, get to gethers, school, workplace, ect.

likely example. you have friends, who have gf's or female friends, who have friends who are also single or know of a friend of a friend who's cute and single or jsut your type ect and so and so on. If your a good bloke and you have a good social network, word will spread soon enough that your now single ;)

Olgaline hit the nail on the head tho, friends of friends usually are more compatible

Honestly... no joke.
I reckon WoW is the biggest dating agency on the internet.
Never known anyone who met their partner over a dating site. But i know several people who found love through WoW ^^

Daoc probably work just aswell. (Although i reckon WoW might have a better female/male ratio than DAoC) It's a numbers game ;) WoW just has A LOT more playing than DAoC.
MMO's just work like a charm. As you meet doing something you both obviously like. You can spend hours and hours talking (with no pressure. As it's a gaming situation. You can both do separate stuff, yet instantly communicate if you want.)

Yes they work, and for either case; shag or mate. Or..mate or mate...anyway!

Have experience, couple of "blind" dates etc.

Key elements to know:

Get to know them. Beprepared to put in effort, and it's easy as pie to get a blind date. BUT...wait before jumping in...second rule more important:

Get a picture! And be prepared to change your logins etc if you find the swampmonster at the other end.

No! F*ck you! Mr Politically correct. Looks DO matter when there'a a 2000lb warhorse at the other computer wanting some animal loving!

Don't give out personal info, or any info, not even a picture, before you've checklisted the following:

Looks.
Personality(psycho alert..honestly! Whole set of rules for those.)
Marital status(yes...yes!)
Met them.

Should be alright.

It's a nice chance, might work, but there are shadows in those depths too.

Mate of mine is going out with a girl he meet of Dating Direct must be near a year now. He has totally changed to the point hes like a different person and she is a fucking bitch so i would not reccomend it :) He might though.

What i mean its easy to make yourself someone else when the girl at the other end says she likes x and y where if you meet someone though your friends like said above you are yourself.

I agree.
Not that i'm afraid of curvy chicks. But honestly, a relationship is part physical attraction. And if you aren't attracted to someone, i don't feel you are superficial for not wanting to date them because of their looks.

No physical attraction = just friends. Sad but true.

what's your opinion then if you're with a hot girl for a year, you love her etc.. then she's in some kind of horrible accident and comes out badly, disfigured or something.. and she became quite ugly... would you still love her all the same?

you don't need instant psyhical attraction for a relationship.. you can get to know someone, really like them and fall for them and end up finding them attractive that way

Guys guys...i'm not talking about chubby, or slightly unattractive. I'm talking about "sit on you and loose you for life", i'm talking "even concrete stairs are afraid", i'm talking f'cking "I'm politically correct up the wazoo and deep as the thames, but even I wouldn't touch that thing!" :D

well your a guy so you'd probably be ok but take care i mean i dont want to be a scare monger but dating sites are occasionally used by people looking to fleece (or worse) someone by gaining their affection. Point in case my maturnal grandmother by all accounts (I never met her this is what i can gather) was a very needy woman, had to have someone, could not function independantly and she apparantly had some money, met a man through a dating agency (long long before the internet these things were run by people!) and he murdered her and stuck her in a freezer (not really necessary for me to tell you that but its gross eh?)

any hoo another example is another relation of mine who met a chap through a dating agency or on line not sure which but they've been happily married for like 15 years now and it all worked out wonderfully.

i guess it doesnt really help you but I'd take Tris's advice first if i were you and sort yourself out, if youve low self asteem and are vulnerable then your more likely to be picked up by predatory people who will use you and see that you can be easily manipulated, if however you sort yourself out get some confidence and stuff then similar people will be attracted to you.

It might be worth while spending a little extra and going for a reputable trustworthy company (eg. Match.com) than some dirt cheap dodgy cowboy outfit (there are plenty of those)

Good luck to you

i guess it doesnt really help you but I'd take Tris's advice first if i were you

only reason i offer it is because i used to the same.

i sorted my shit out and suddenly had woman drawn to me from every angle.

sorting your shit involves getting some self respect, sorting your image and getting over your inhibitions. once you realise its near on impossible to make a fool of your self, youre sorted. half the problem is you feel scared to do something because others will think youre stupid. aslong as youre not going to extremes, walking around dressed like a clown or pretending youre superman.

i dont know if you work, or goto college etc but i know one good way to build confidence. put your self forward to talk to groups or give presentations. i had to do it my self last year having been scared previously doing it infront of 12 people. i was going solo infront of 70 odd giving short talks.

it helps.

I agree.

But in some cases it can work in the reverse way. Finding a special someone or even a good friend can help you get your self-confidence and feel more appreciative about yourself and your abilities.

Well this is a f*cking laugh, on all the things we argue with tris- about, we're in the same "i know myself, f'ck off" stage. Just , tris- is more "i'm me f*ck off", where as i'm more "i'm me, leave me alone" :D

Good words there, and *gosh shock* i agree.

When i was unaware, unsure, didn't know myelf(yes my inner legolas...it's a typo!). I didn't get any attention, aka, loser if you will. When i realised who i am, what i want, what i do and how little opinions meant to me, them birds be flying out the woodwork :)

One old, good saying is: People wouldn't care so much about how they look, if they knew how f'ck all others notice.

I added that "f'ck all" bit, but, gives more oompf.

I thank you for your advice (and everyone else who's replied)

I've always known i need to sort myself out, even my parents have told me this. Ive just had alot of set backs in my life, and these things have always had a knock on effect to my confidence.

I do work, and unfortunatly, my recent Ex always works at the same place lol, although we have ended on good terms (she just wants to be close friends) it still kinda hard for me atm lol.

No disrespect or belittleling, but I'll get a bit Scottish on you and say:

Well, bet'ya ain't been dumped by a lass after a rump 'cause you waren't good enoug'?

Now, i tell ya, THAT there stings a bit ;)

Chin up, life knocks you down like a motherf*cker, but you get up, one day, and when you do, you'll be that much stronger.

Regarding MMO dating, never introduce your new girlfriend to the MMO you play, recent forum studies conducted by me has shown that raiding guild leaders are pro at making your girlfriend cheat with them.

Witnessed this myself 3 times in WoW so far, it's hilarious to watch but it's kind of sad for the guy who just lost his girlfriend and his backup plan, ranting about her cheating on him in guildchat.
