Disk Read Error...

Hi guys. I've had my new pc for like a month, and its already broken. I went to turn it on this morning and got the message "disk read error". Everytime I reboot, or press F10 for a fix, it gives me the same error message. I've tried booting with the Windows XP disc in, but it doesn't work either. Just the same message. If anyone has any idea how to fix then then I'd really appreciate it. My family are going on holiday for 2 weeks tomorrow morning, so I'll be home alone, and I'm going to be bored senseless without my computer.

Do you mean my hard drive, or disc drive, or what? I have no idea what the problem is. :(

I mean your hard drive. IBM, Maxtor, WesternDigital, etc. also, have you taken the SATA / ATA cable out and re-seated it?

I've got a Samsung SpinPoint P120S 200GB SATA2 but I can't seem to find any help software for it or anything...

Advantage of having a heavy dose of the flu useless for most things but can at least help out people with web searchs :)

Try this - Only tool for that Hardrive on Samsungs website

That is assuming the drive is the SP1213C (Edited as put the 1203N but thats the ATA while 1213C is there SATA drive).

As to what this tool does dont know no documentation on the website

Although that appears to be a dostool so you will still need a dos boot disk etc.

But ensure you have checked the cables first (at both ends) and ensure that the cable is not bent as SATA cables like to be straight / no kinks.

Ignore my last mail to late to edit it..

Thats the wrong drive yours is the SP2004C and no tools on the website for that drive.

But check the cable though could well be its slipped out or got damaged.

Reading techy stuff with the flu is not productive to good results :)

Thanks, Ukle. Which cables though? There are 2 cables coming out of my hard drive. One goes into the PSU and the other goes into somewhere else (the mobo I think?)

I just went to reinstall windows xp and it gave an error saying it couldn't be completed due to a hard disk configuration error. I've emailed the website I ordered it from (Komplett) and they have asked me to try other hard drives in the system. I can't though, since I'm not allowed to dismantle this computer so I'm going to have to send it off to them for them to test it. This is the worse possible timing. It seems to be unfixable though, as I can't even reinstall my OS. :(:(:(

Not the power cable, the other one. Most SATA cables seem to have fairly dodgy connectors that arent particularly firmly held in place, its possible it just came loose.

Its worth checking the cables, but really it just sounds fucked to me. Time to look at getting the drive replaced: at least its fairly new so the warranty shouldnt be a problem.

one ill be the power, the other the IDE (or SATA) cables. Makes sure that they are firmly in place.

Yeah, I've checked them, and replaced them with another I got. No luck though.

I think you're right Draylor, I'm just going to send it off for repairs. I'm gutted though. 2 weeks home alone. No porn for me. :(

Nah, it doesn't work. Gives an error message as well. :(

I'm going to send the HD off to the company, they said they would take a look and replace it if necessary. I'm trying to remove it now, but the graphics card is in the way. How do I remove the graphics card? it doesn't seem that simple to remove :(

Hi Mobius

I'm not sure if this is your Dell PC, but regardless the procedure for removing the graphics card is the same. Dell provide some instructions on how to do it.

Kind Regards

S'alright, I managed to remove it. A little plastic bit fell off, I hope that wasn't important. :( I've packed my HD up and I'm just waiting for them to confirm it can be sent.

Little bit of plastic from where?

At a guess its probably just a clip intended to make sure the graphics card stays securely in position: which makes removing it for anyone without pencil-thin fingers rather interesting.
