Once you have all the gear, whats the pvp like?pvp is probably the hardest thing to do in Diablo 2 laddey, gear is everything. 1 misspent spec point can be character = shit. Its lightening fast and your kind of bottlenecked intro requiring the amazing Enigma runeword just for the +1 teleport.
D2's best feature by far was just gear grinding, killing wave upon wave of npcs hoping to see that elusize high rune drop or eth Crown of ages!

Can't you buy this stuff online cheap? like £2.50 for some armor etci never had good enough gear and i spent a shit load of time on my barb. Once you get established and lucky with some 'FREE ITAMZ' games then you can start trading up and getting decent stuff, will take a few months i reckon.
You should have a look at Torchlight too. It's an obvious rip off but done very well, even Blizzard have said many of them play it in their spare time.
The maps dont change on Single Player? If your not fussed about PvP - consider single player. You lose the social aspect but you can set /players 8, you have a tool called ATMA to move items between characters and store them in 'infinite sized stashes' and you can decide which version you wish to play. You also enjoy static maps and don't have to worry about acquiring duped items or being hit by spammers etc.
You can also branch off into D2 mods, some of which completely revamp the game.
