Dex to hit cast speed cap - quick test

Finally decided to test myself if taking dex over 386, which supposedly hits the cast speed cap with +10% cast speed on template, had any effect...

Basically used my luri eldie with 10% cast speed to chain cast gray AF shield 400-600 times with chat.log on, took the total time and divided it by number casts to give cast speed. Rinse and repeat with higher dex. Delve cast time on AF shields is 3s. Results for cast speeds:

augdex, dex, cast(s), %delve
0, 369, 1.39, 46.2
2, 381, 1.40, 46.6
3, 391, 1.41, 46.8
5, 417, 1.40 , 46.6

Results a bit strange tbh. First point is all results around 46% delve instead of the 40% cap, second thing is really no difference between 369 and 417 noticable over the margin of error.

Any comment on testing? Seemed pretty solid method tbh. Not played eldie yet in rvr since respec, so no comment on whether it *seems* faster...mebbe tonight.

i think the problem with your test is that you used a too fast spell. 3.0 sec spell can be easily capped, just like in your test, 10% cast speed and 370 dex is enough to get it to 1.4 which is cap. try the same test with your damage shield, which is 4.0 cast time. you should get variance with higher/lower dex on that afaik.

If this would be the case(Which I highly doubt) it would still mean that you cap 3.0 sec spells and lower with 369 dex. Is quite interesting really.

Could you try to do this with a longer and a shorter cast speed spell?

Nice test, I was wondering however if there's any slower spells then 3.0 cast-time worth casting in RvR for classes who can obtain that much dexterity (list-casters only).

The only useful spell I can think of a longer casting-time is the resurrection-spells, but those are only available to classes who have shit all DEX anyhow.

Only spells, correct me if Im wrong, for list-casters are 2.0 sec, 2.5 sec, 2.8 sec and 3.0 sec (for combo nukes like snare nukes) which are worth using

His reply was good, because the previous statement was wrong on all levels.
It requires some clear explanation, which not everyone has the time to type out.
Here goes my try:
Spells are not capped on a fixed cast speed, ie some think capped cast spd is 1 second or 1.5 seconds for all spells.Or you reach capped cast speed with 386 dex on 2.8 second spells, but not on slower spells.
Instead all spells are capped on 40% of there delved cast speed.
A 2 second spell is capped at 0.8 seconds, a 2.5 seconds delve spell at 1 second etc.

For a test in which you try to establish at what lvl of dex you reach the cap for your spells, you take a spell you can spam eternally with a slow as possible cast speed.
Why as slow a spell as possible?
Because you're talking about such small differences in cast speed you'd need a lot more castings of that spell to get a clear cast speed difference between the 2 dex values. Also tiny bits of lag, which will occur, will have a direct impact on your cast speed results when testing with super fast spells.

As you can see any testing of cast speeds is very hard.
You can do a test of several hundred cast and get a nice clear line between the differing dex values. But with results which vary such as these you can't conclude anything really. The only thing I can conclude is an error in the parsing or a test pretty badly affected by lag.
If you redo those test and get the same results again, either you have very consistent lag with your varying dex values or it's time for a WTF note to Goa and Mythic, cause those results really make no sense.

I did a test on a 1.76 test server using a Luri chanter with +15 starting dex, 101 dex from items, Aug Dex 5 and max buffs for a total of 417 dex.
I cast the 2 sec heat debuff with an average cast speed of about 0.8 secs so there definitely isn't (or wasn't when 1.76 was about to go live) a 1.4 sec hard cap on cast times. The 2.5 sec PBAoE was about a 1.1 sec cast time IIRC. I'll see if I can dig the log out sometime.

Yeah, wasn't presenting the results as being definative or anything, kinda hoping someone else will try to repeat or design a similar test to confirm or rubbish em.

I dunno if lag or something can significantly effect the results from the log (chain cast spells all queued) although there is the argument that if you can't design a test involving 400+ casts sensitve enuff to tell the difference between 369 and 417 dex, it's certainly not worth the 34 rsps.

Did have a run for a couple of hours last night with 417 dex instead of the usual 381 I been running with and I really couldn't tell the difference although I not been so active lately.

Anyhow, will try with diff delve spells over next few days (unfortunately software to parse em at work). Like I say, hope someone else will mebbe try and post results.

No chance with a stopwatch of doing this accurately (i have tried, just not possible to coordinate your hands to do it 100% accurately plus it gets unclear as to when the spell actually stops).

I think some people who claim to have done this have never actually tried to do it, unless you use a third-party programme (bannable offense under CoC) I can't see how it can be done.

All i know is with 400+ dex on my brothers mage the cast speed is roughly under a second on 2 second spells, roughly just over a second on most others.

Yeah, you would need a latency that is greater than your cast time. If you have that high latency, it's possible to notice (especially when casting), and thus you can discard that test and try again.

Furthermore, you don't really need to empty your power bar. Just stand in a FoP casting the first AF buff as I am sure is what Maeloch did.

Spells are queued serverside anyway, so there should be absolutely no error in the results.

Chose 368 and 417 dex as data points, as previous test showed no difference between these values (ignoring the fact 386 is supposed cap for the moment). This time removed armour to change dex instead of respeccing.

First off, think the explaination for the previous results is that I didn't reboot between aug dex respecs and tho stats got updated on display they didn't actually update for casting. Only thing I can think. On the plus side, fact that the results are almost identical at least shows the testing method is reproducable.

Anyhow, after latest results looking like taking dex past 386 is required to hit a cap speed, in fact you won't even cap with 417 dex. Need to take a data point just over 386 dex to confirm, but doubt you get those % decreases in cast speed just with the 18 pts between 368 and 386 dex. Will do that last test later and my work here is done!

Wierd that these tests are so difirent to last ones. I wonder, when you said you removed some armor pieces to lower/raise dex, did you remove armor with +cast speed% ?

Also, with these tests did you have 10% cast speed in the first place?

This time I'm casting a heat debuff with a 2 sec delve. There are 65 casts in 53 seconds for an average cast time of 0.81 secs or 40.5% of the delve.
I did these tests after an argument I had in my Gaheris guild. The Thane TL insisted that spells were hardcapped at 1.4 secs and I was pretty sure they weren't so I ran some tests to see who was right. These are the results.

Wierd that these tests are so difirent to last ones. I wonder, when you said you removed some armor pieces to lower/raise dex, did you remove armor with +cast speed% ?

Also, with these tests did you have 10% cast speed in the first place?

Nah armour I took off was just sc'd stuff. Both tests I did in my normal template so deffo 10% cast speed. Like I say, I think the reason for the original results was my dex not updating properly after respeccing.

Good to see some other people actualy getting out their and testing what really is happening and not just going on 'gut instinct' about their cast times or legend and rumour.

Would like to see a comparison of 386 dex vs a 400+dex cast log to end this finaly. I found 386 to be the cap ages ago when I did testing similar to Maelochs, and many cast speed calculators agreed. But ofc that may have changed and no longer be the case.

Your results are ...strange... you seem to get different cast speed modifiers for different spells 40.5%, 58%. As far as I understand it the cast speed modifier is teh same for all spells and pretty much the last step in the calculation so whatever spell you test you should get the same results. I can certainly beat your 58% for pb with well under 400 dex.

Very interesting that 386 doesnt cap, need to get some results together to see if cast speed by dex is linear, and also get some cube data against different cast speed spells to extrapolate results for appropriate dex cap for different delve cast times.

Im not convinced anyone has prooved that 386 doesnt cap yet, 368 certainly if you belive maels 2nd set of test, but hey we all knew that!

No need to work out different cast caps, as there is only one. Afaik the formula is something like... max (0.4,f(dex)) (where f is some unknow probably linear function) to find out cast speed multipier which is then multipied by delve to give acutal cast time. i.e. there should be a magic dex number at which all spells will cast for exactly 0.4 delve regardless of cast time. This can easily be varifed by comparing two greatly differing cast speed spells give any constant dex, the effective cast speed modifer would then be shown to be the same...

from the logs I've seen and from the innacuracy of the game logs (max resolution is 1 second) and the complete lack of error correction used in analysis of these data, I can safely say I don't believe a word of any of it.

Until someone does it properly with a couple thousand casts and has a pingplot running so they can be 100% sure of lag issues, there is little point even looking at the results.

A quoted answer without an error is meaningless.
