2 games I can think of that caused me to leap skywards...

Unreal - early in the game where your in a corridor, the lights switch off one by one, then a creature bursts out of nowhere and attacks

Half Life - those bloody face sucker things. It wasn't just the 1st time I jumped either....just about everytime one sprang out of nowhere I swore loudly shot a foot in the air.

er, HL didn't scare me at all, coz it was wank SP

AvP was evil tho, everyone seemed more powerful than my ickle marine. and the rooms were so dark, you'd see an alien and dismiss it as just a light reflecting off the ceiling or whatever, only for it to pounce on you, you flail round throwing flares and sharpnel at your own feet, and die in a seeping pool of your own excrement & blood.

Bit of a short one this, which is why I didn't bother putting it on my column..

There have been precious few PC games that, despite having FMV sequences that have had the ability to strike terror into the soul through their amazing realism (Diablo2's for instance) have actually caused me to be physically scared witless..

With one exception: Aliens vs Predator

Now, I can't physically play this game as Marine simply because, if you'll pardon my French, playing as the marine scares the living shit out of me. Playing as the Alien or the Predator, no problem - but the Marine.. for some reason I turn from a hardcore FPS monkey into a jibbering fool.

Anyway, the point of this post is to ask whether anyone knows of any game, past or present, besides AvP that has actually been "frightening" in the same sense as Aliens (the film) was when you were a kid....

Has got to be halflife. When I started to play single player.

A few times I'd be in a darkish place and could swear something was crawling on the floor (those small face hugger things). About 3 times in the game I jumped when they came out of nowhere to hit my face, and make that odd screaming noise :}

Yup, HL defo gave me the shivers a couple of times, often down to the sounds of some of the monsters..

Don't think any other game has got me scared as such tho, AVP was a nice concept tho, but think could have been done much better.

But, the original Aliens game (on 8bit computers) was ironically the only thing that has ever come close to AvP.

Also, SS2 (and SS) - best single player games ever. Easily. They piss all over Half Life. Both had their fair share of bowel-evacuating moments.

And the scariest game of all time is....

Doom.

Late at night with the lights out, when you first encounter the cyberdemon. The only time I have ever jumped at a computer game.

Oh and BTW, HL was as scary as the Garbage Pail kids.

Argh! I forgot all about that moment. I remember it clearly too, all the lights would switch off and there would be an eerily long pause while you stood in total darkness before that almighty "thing" jumped out at you.

I would definitely say SS2 (System Shock 2) was more scarier than HL - there was one moment where I was "hacking" into some camera system when I heard a voice behind me saying something along the lines of "join us". I turned around to see one of those mutated guard blokies just about to swing at me. Needless to say I needed a change of clothes shortly afterwards..

woah, dunno about you guy, but the game that scared the shit outta me the most has to be minesweeper, i mean come on, all those mine thingys and err, flag thingys, jesus christ, scary stuff there.

Seriously, Duke 3d was pretty good for that shit, the standard monster that go "errrrrggggghhhh"

I agree with Bodhi. Half Life did make me jump sometimes but Doom not only made me jump many, MANY times but actually haunted some of my dreams! The whole thing was horror-based, geared towards making you terrified to walk into the next room, and it certainly worked on me.

ALso, those face hugger things in Half Life weren't that scary (except when they jumped at you in a vent shaft). It was much more scary when that lift got stuck and then suddenly plunged into a big vat of toxic waste stuff without warning.

installed a patch
everything was the same
very late at night , very dark, very drunk or stoned , one of the 2 prob. both.
and a new level started came through a door
to hear on the headphones
"# i love you ,# you love me,#.... "
well at that point i thought you have lost it m8, big time.
it was some u.s.a. kids prog. a big thing with a tail, it's sometimes on uk t.v. .

Now don't laugh but Doom on the Playstation and the Cyberdemon.

On Ultimate Doom I think you're in a room with four doors and this marching sound. You open one door, nothing, you walk into this open area, hear a screaming sound and see this thing thats 10ft tall and looks like its had a very bad day.

HL was great as well.
