Wot yaruar said really... He's obviously like me a systems admin who knows what he's talking bout. 90% of what was said above is fanboi/forum speak. Anyone trying to replace his windows desktop for gaming with a linux one either loves to experiment, or is just a geek.

Linux is good at server/firewall stuff, windows owns the desktop market big time, and they got it right from 2000 on imho. Saying Linux is safer is cause linux is less popular than windows, and hence windows is main target for viruses (often written by linux geek-ass fanboi btw). Check any linux/unix patch distribution list and you'll see it has as much or even more patches/fixes than Windows.

I can give you versionnumbers of RedHat distributions which are a downright JOKE when it comes to stability.

This aside, I'm a pretty big fan of linux/unix systems, but replacing my GAMING/Office desktop with one -> I don't think so.

Not like its of my good will to support a sucky OS like Windows that is getting more and more bugs, and is UBER expensive. If you ask me, ill prefer linux.
Why ? - Because Its free, because its stable, because of the software that is free.

--HINT-- SOmeone translate that french forum for me, wanna know how to run DAoC on unix.

I doubt the costs for a big company differ much from Windows / Linux... Definitly not if they have to switch from Windows to Linux... (re-educating your it staff, etc)

You dont even want to start running Linux on the desktop pc's of your employee's...

Linux is a nice Server OS, thats it... And it probably has its uses over Win2003 Server... But saying Win2003 is crap cause it costs money?

At least with Windows a company can hold Microsoft responsible for bugs / leaks... Who is a company going to hold responsible for bugs / leaks in Linux? The open source community ? Fix it theirselves? Dont make me laugh...

If Linux had a company backing it up, instead of developers that have no real responsibilities... Then Linux would probably be way more populair under the big companies... (thats why 90% of the companies go for a linux from red hat type companies, but still its not 'the same')

As for development tools, if you like programming in vi or whatever, sure develop on Linux... If, however, you like to develop programs that are easy to use, perhaps stuff like Visual Studio.NET / Delphi arent even that bad, heck, their really good... (yea I know there's Kylix on Linux, step in the right direction, but still not comparable)

My win2k pc is stable enough for me. I only crash once a month and thats more due to faulty program or me rushing the pc to much. Besides a crash only happens when playing games and Im back in the game within 5 mins. My pc can run for weeks without crashing, I usually had to restart my pc way more often to activate windows patches than because it was unstable.

Linux is more stable than windows, but for an os at home windows works well enough for most people and it isnt as confusing to use(and doesnt have the name to be difficult).

In case you missed it, Lunix has IBM backing it...that a pretty impressive big hitter imo.
