Ok, recently i have had alot of messages pop up saying my PC is infected with spyware / adware... i recently installed windows again and forgot to install my spyware programs etc. when i installed the software to remove all the crap on my PC, it stated it had removed it all, 1 day later im getting the same messages again. i scanned my PC a second time and it found nothing....i done it a third time and nothing...

im currenty using Webroot spy sweeper. ive also noticed that im unable to change certain settings in my controll pannel, im only able to press accept and cancell... so annoying because when im playing DAOC it keeps taking me to windows and im getting pop ups telling me to buy and download spyware software..

Any advice would be great. thanks

Edit: Can i just add i cant even change my homepage!!

If you get popups saying you are infected, then you are infected. The infection is the program that creates the popup. The forum in this link has removal instructions for most of these malware, but from your description I can't tell which one you have.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html

Most of them are similar and only differ in filenames and which program they tell you to buy. I'm sure you'll be able to find out which one you have if you look through the posts there.

More info please, looks nice - but since I don't understand it I don't want to install it hehe.
hehe, it's a script-like program that just operates several other programs, and runs a fast test where it feels that the other programs are lacking. down a bit on that page is a list of programs Hitman Pro uses to clear your PC from spyware :)

I got it running on my PC for several years now, and it works like a charm though your firewall might pop up a fair few times during the process (due to each program requesting internet access for updates etc)

First run a few scans with different scanners, then get back if problem is still there

And settings in control panel ? The controlpanel consists of a few different programs/Settings you can run - don't quite get what you mean by only being able to click OK and Cancel button...A screenie might help..
Maybe you're not logged as administrator and you don't have permissions to change anything ?

It's not free, but I think the cost is under UK£10.

http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/

It also kind of looks like ass, but it's far and away the best spyware-killer out at the moment. Did some tests (Norton Ghost on a horribly spywared old PC) and tried about 10 different free and paid for anti-spyware tools. Spyware Doctor was the only one that caught and removed everything without manual intervention.

And no, I don't work for them :p

Spybot S&D is free and will perma block many bad website (use the immunize function) that are the source of these infections (free screensaver, free ringtone, porn sites etc)

NOD32 free 30day trial of probably the best AV package around atm, 30 days should be plenty to clean your pc ;)

ZoneAlarm a good free software firewall.

Personally use spybot and adaware sweeping every 2 weeks at a minimum. For Firewall I use Agnitum Outpost:

http://www.agnitum.com/

I did have the free version of Zone Alarm installed but for no apparent reason, every few weeks, it would stop two other PC's and a laptop connecting though to the Internet Gateway on the main. Totally bizarre and never explained. Switched to agnitum and never looked back - great Firewall and easy to configure.

I had a similar virus/spyware not long ago
I was lucky because I had only recently done a safe system restore point.

If your last safe system restore point is not going to cause you any hassle (with outdated program updates etc) I suggest this is easy and quick way to remove this virus/spyware.
It worked for me.

I now use Spybot, Spyblocker and Adaware has well as my bundled Norton.
Spyblocker is pretty usefull has its got a function that locks your home page (just remeber if you want to change it yourself you will have to unlock it using spyblocker)

If u got that shutdown thingie most likely u got Blaster Worm or something similar exploiting a security issue of Windows OS fixed ages ago.
Clean it with a removal software and patch all u can from windows update.

Leave it on over night as it's not exactly fast.. with all tests selected it takes a few hours

Might be more advisable, to go to downloads.com and get

Ad-Aware
Spybot
AVG
CCleaner
Startup Mechanic
Peerguardian 2
and a FW of your chosing, and you'll be fine.

like I said: "runs a fast test where it feels that the other programs are lacking." meaning that the full test isn't fast, but besides hitman pro running all those other programs, it also has a scanner of its own which he uses to scan things he feels the other programs should've done aswell. Like an augmented test.
The full suite ain't fast, just that little test of himself is. ;)

haha this post made me laugh big time :p

You have no way of detecting these evil programs but u are sure u havent got any...rofl

With no firewall it takes often less then 10 mins after u connect for a random operator trojan to reach and install itself into your system. (just install detection alert in Symantec and u see how long it take before spiders find and try accessing your system)

But you have now way of stopping this or even detecting it .. so you CANT have it on you computer then hehe

Yeah!! I guess you are very lucky :p
