The one (or even two) page is a bit of a myth. If the skillset is there recruiters will read a longer one.

I've always been told experience/achievements/education (and you can put in achievements with experience, maybe with a summary at the start), but it kind of depends on who you're applying to; big corporate HR depts sometimes simply run a keyword search on the document and bin anything that doesn't hit a certain score, whereas smaller companies still bother to read them. Also, put your LinkedIn profile at the top of the CV, as that's also used for searches.

NB. Do your CV as a PDF, especially if you've chosen a non-native font.

Best advice of all? Try to get a skill where employers come after you. I've only applied for jobs twice since 1996.

If your listing previous jobs be concise.
  • Company - Location
  • Date from & to
  • Position
    • Duties
    • Experience
Aside from that add in any training courses and always tailor the CV to the position your applying for. List experience that is relevant to the new position. I hate trying to work through CV's that are too long winded. If you can't fit it on 2 pages then try to reduce it.

However, most initial reads are by an HR recruitment specialist - who look for:
  • Education level requirements
  • Relevant experience
Then the ones that make it through go to someone who will actually read it properly. So I would not agree that the two page is a myth. It's certainly helps me.

What type of job you are after can be hugely relevant to the type of CV you need to create. Also who you are sending the CV to if its going to a HR department they will browse your Technical abilities however if it going to the technical manager he will get a techno-Hardon if you play the same MMORPG that he plays and he needs your l337 skillz.

google " BBC and CV creation" as there is quite a good help page there.. I cant post link as I have been away for years and do not have the rights..

I'm currently doing 2nd line IT support. I have the chance to move into an Audio Visual role which I'm tempted by as it's a more specific area. Need to update the CV first though.

Do you mean you want to do IT support for a company that produces A/V or producing A/V yourself? If its IT support, showing you understand how production works would probably mean a lot.

Sometimes less is more. A clear grammatically correct document gets you noticed.

a friend sent me this. http://theultralinx.com/2013/08/20-cool-resume-cv-designs.html

ofc she is a frontend web dev so I assume she likes the pretty colours and rounded edges :)

I'd almost expect something like this if I was recruiting for a designer; unfortunately, if you're recruiting for a designer via a recruitment agency, chances are you'd never actually see any of this creativity.

Actually interviewing designers is a whole other kettle of fish; some of the best and absolute worst candidates I've ever had to interview have been for design jobs. I've seen people who were clearly mentally unwell, one who was actually scary (as in, "call security" scary), a lot of liars (who'd referenced others' work as their own), but I've been lucky to have worked with 2 or 3 absolute diamonds. My currently lead designer is superb, I live in fear of her being poached.

Run your CV through MS office or MS Word viewer to check formatting before sending it off if you use anything other than office.

Office do a free web app that lets you edit word documents, but only supports downloading as .docx which is not ideal as places often as for a .doc in my experience.

.pdf is the best choice but often again not what is asked for.

Similar experiences myself in Middle East. Interviewed a UAE local (under pressure from HR) not long ago who basically had zero experience. When asked about salary expectations he basically wanted Director level salary. We asked about working hours being US based company which means lots of night time telecoms etc. He said, "I have family duties which mean I cannot arrive before 10 am. I also love the desert too much, it is my home. So I must leave between 2 and 3 pm". By this time I lost patience with the guy and just asked if there was anything he would like. He proceeded to spout off a list a mile long. Basically came down to pay me shit loads with lots of benefits but I do not want to travel or do any work. Which is a bit of an issue working in the airline business!

Also had people blatantly lie and when questioned on it started making threats. One guy even said he would have me killed. I simply held my phone up and said thanks for the recording I will notify the police as soon as you've been thrown out the building.

Constantly amazed by how some people behave in interview situations. From too nervous to talk to the other extreme of putting feet on the table, chewing gum and won't shut up.

Everyone was really nice and it seems like a great place to work.

Since my current phone is a shitty Sony Ericsson they've decided to give me a smartphone of my choice :D

That's the most cringeworthy thing I've ever seen, what is it with these 'ponyfags' are whatever they're known by?

Went for a job interview last week. Got sent an email yesterday asking to set up a 30 minute phone interview with their "Talent acquisition manager." Have you ever heard such Yank bollox in your life? I've already done an in person interview with 5 people who I would actually work with on a daily basis! They also asked for my references, but didn't fucking call anyone, they emailed some fill in the blank form!

Americans.

I followed up on references once. The guy was too good on paper, and he didn't leave me that impression during the interview, but he seemed so sure of himself, I actually "called" his bluff, because he had made the shortlist, against my recommendation. (HR, grr)

So I ring up the reference person (ex-manager), which proceeds with basically telling me not to hire the guy - he didn't say it outright, but i got the message.

Careful of who you select as reference.

Some dude once cited me as a reference to a guy who actually knows me (lol u/l lol). He phoned me and asked me if I would hire the dude. Sadly, it was my studied opinion that said dude was a complete fuckwit and I said so. Guy didn't hire the fuckwit. Thank sweet baby jebus for that.
