Ok some people in IRC, some quite well sorted people , think that CS 1.6 is out tonight along with the new non-beta steam.
Im not sure one way or the other to be honest , though I hope they are right.
Has anyone heard anything about it ?

To be completely honest this is how I see it , however Sparks and co see it differently, and as I respect their opinions I need more info :)

I though 1.6 was already out on Steam? Like about 2 months ago???

Thats the beta version .
Steam will be non beta as of tonight, but does that mean cs 1.6 will go non beta, or not ?
I think it will remain beta for a week or two yet, but the chaps who run our server think different, which is why Im asking if anyone else knows anything.

As far as I see it, 1.6 is available through steam. Thefore, you can play 1.6 tonight.

Steam offers the ability to patch CS (and others) when you boot it up. In 2 weeks WON will go and everyone will have a mandatory update to move them to steam.

So 1.6 will be the only CS available in 2 weeks time, but in the meantime you can play 1.5 or 1.6.

If by "official 1.6" you mean "can only play 1.6 as 1.5 has been removed" its 2 weeks away.

Well, our server is being updated tonight see , they think that 1.6 is no longer beta, and thats that.
Ive been playing 1.6 beta for a few weeks now, im fully aware of its existance, but Im wondering if all the other servers are going to go 1.6 immediatley too .

All servers ( as prom explained in the other thread) should move to steam within 2 weeks. This means that CS 1.6 should be the only CS available in two weeks, however I understood that it is still going to be in beta form (or its current form, which is fairly bug free) till a new release of it.

If WON is going, does that mean TFC is changing too?

Ok as I understand it at 20:10 hrs 10th September 2003 -

Steam is no longer in Beta, so everyone needs to resign up for it, however I believe that the client side for CS 1.6 won't be available until tomorrow.

So sign up for steam 2nite and D/L the client side stuff for CS and the other games listed tomorrow, if u can get on to the servers that is.

/me goes for a lie down.

WONID's are from tonight useless. Servers and clients will now work on whats called Steamid's this means that every ban for the past 5 years is now useless. Cheats are now welcome to cheat again on game servers. GG valve

From Steampowered.com

The Steam dedicated server will be released this evening, and the Steam client release is now scheduled for tomorrow.

It isn't 1.6 Server and client as much as the actually Steam server and client. So you can't just download steam and then wait till tomorrow to get 1.6

Im a touch confused with this Steamy thing (comes with age Im afraid :()

Will it still be possible to DL the latest patches from a machine which does NOT have CS installed? Since Im on 56k, I usually DL my patches at work, but due to Admin rights, I obviously dont have HL installed, so will I still be able to do this?

If not then its all very, very gay. :(

Afaik, you only need your cd key. Although if you do do this at work, consider you will be downloading everything needed to playonline. Your better off installing a basic HL/CS install at work and then installing steam, burning the files to cd, putting on your hd and the running steam again to register it on your pc.

It doesnt even ask for ur cd key, it checks for you as its installing.
However as you say its very very gay for people with 56k, or even, to be honest, with isdn.
Its not a patch as such, so you can't down load it and put it onto a cd, it has to be downloaded onto the pc you're using to play the game.
The only alternative, as Ch3tan has pointed out, appears to be to load your Half Life onto a pc with broadband, then install steam and update to the correct version etc. Then copy all the files onto a cd and transfer them to your own pc.
What a drama, I really do sympathise :(

Alright then, i dont fuck ya ;)

Actually if you recall I had ISDN until a few months ago, and quite honestly the difference in downloads aint all that in this context, so I do realise the problem ...

Mine did that bit in minutes...

However, I did leave mine downloading the updates for CS, HL, etc at 9am this morning and the missus just phoned me at work to say thats its all locked up. You cant even leave it idling away without it crashing

Did it to me aswell. There is something wrong with that cache thing im sure. I ctrl alt deleted my way out of steam a set it going again. It then updated the platform and started going.

yeah ive got it "installed" (i think?) now, but its running incredibly sluggish... i havent played a game yet.. because it keeps on locking up and responding about 5mins later.

Just locked up again now :/

It's working fine for me. Wow, things installing and running fine no problems. That's a rarity.

It's all weird though, it looks fun but I want to know why they got rid of the sig. They're renamed stuff so it confuses me now, oh well! It's not going to force me completely out of retirement... yet.

btw, where are all the BW/KEA peeps playing?
