@Gwadien the study kinda shows that schools are no worse than the rest of the community. So the kids dont seem to be super spreaders. Although they are continuing the research.

Super spreaders is a loaded term that just sets you up for a rebuttal.

What kids ARE doing is mixing a lot, which most (loaded term again sorry) adults aren't. So there will be some spread obviously.

Some spread yes That wasnt the arguement. Its that they do not spread in greater quantities than the rest of the community. But they are no more than the rest of the community. So there is no more risk than in an all adult environment.

It did fail the elderly this has been stated man times here so no news... we have investigated here the issues already and the same conclusion.

Sweden has become the political football, one minute theyre doing well..then theyre the worst.

Im very confident their approach will be the standard from now on.

I do not think they have solved all their issues with the elderly homes and because of that they may wel be nationalised again.

Sweden didn't just fail the elderly in isolation. Their families and friends were failed too. This isn't just an "old people" issue - and even if it was the very idea that it's "just" an old people issue is morally abhorrent.

Children and grandchildren have lost family members at a rate higher than all the other scandinavian countries combined. And for what? So the lower age population could have a bit more freedom? I sympathise with Norway and Finland and their complaint that Sweden's actions have put their populations at risk.

That asshat Tegnell in November was still saying that he believes he's got the best strategy! What a tool!

He was wrong. Lots of people died unnecessarily. The fact is voluntary measures don't seem to work.


It's a shame really. Because in nearly every other respect Sweden does really really well :(

The summary report in English re the spring - i have not read it yet only the last paragraph I'll read the rest when I ahve more time on my hands...

Would be good if other countries had started their investigations and published their findings.... The summary is clear the government is responsible - not Tegnell or the FHM (who has stated right from the beginning that the elderly should be and should have been protected - even if he is an idiot).

Ultimately it is any countries leadership that is at fault, or due praise for their handling of it; very few governments, if any, will come out of this smelling of roses but then they have had to try and balance the economic impact with the health impact.

Realistically a few thousand extra dead people, mostly either old or already ill, is a sacrifice they were/are willing to make to protect the economy

This is correct except in western economies the good health of its citizens is reliant on a well functioning economy - regardless of whether this is right or wrong it is what it is and sorting that mess out will take longer than the CV19 vaccination rollout .

Of course its not even remotely over is it and we are now looking at tier 4! lockdowns after christmas.
NI is going for a 6 week lockdown in the new year, our policy is now fucking madness , cancer treatments delayed by up to 3 months is only the tip of the carnage.
This could actually be the start of the demise of western culture, finally taken out by irrational fear, fed our death by a thousand articles of doom.
Well good old Texas is having none of it and putting their fate in the hands of the big guy in the sky.

I think we will be in this until at least next year summer time perhaps even longer.
Depends how quickly they get the vaccine out to everyone.

Not that I really think you can compare Sweden to its direct neighbours - nowhere else in Scandinavia has a 4 week Easter Holiday where they all jet off to the Alps for starters - however if you stop focusing on COVID deaths and look at all cause mortality over the last 2 years, the 4 countries are all running about the same rate:

Sweden was clearly less badly hit by flu etc in the run up to this happening, resulting in more vulnerable people back in March. Add in the Swede's travel habits, and it's clear why they had a bad time in April. Whilst they have still had a second wave, it looks to be much smaller than other European countries that got hit hard in March - and even some that avoided it in March.

However if Norway and Finland are concerned Sweden have put their countries at risk - they have a weird way of showing it. If they were genuinely concerned about the virus jumping the border, they'd probably have implemented more stringent restrictions than the Swedes. And yet:

The things is these restrictions are all about balance. The two extreme policies are letting it rip unabated, or weld everyone in their homes until it passes. Both are morally abhorrent, so we need to find something in the middle. Sweden shifted the balance more towards keeping the country moving and keeping other parts of the health service running, and their results aren't entirely different from the other major European countries that went for the house arrest approach - and no, I don't consider Norway or Finland to be major European countries. Denmark seems to the standout, however considering their restrictions have been on the lighter side, they really aren't a beacon of harsh restriction effectiveness. In fact the only countries which have seen good results from lockdown are:

New Zealand - a small island at the end of the earth with more sheep than people, widely spaced around that got hit by a respiratory illness in their summer. They played COVID-19 on easy, with auto-aim and infinite ammo.
Australia - a bigger island one step before the end of the earth with tough immigration laws, also got hit in summer.
China - um yeah, says it all really.

Other than that I really am struggling to see any correlation between the level of restrictions and how a country has been affected by this disease. At the end of the day, virus gonna virus, and various government efforts to play King Canute seem somewhere between futile and kicking the can down the road.

This whole argument is "stop looking at the thing we can do much better at and look at this instead".

No. Lets focus on the thing we can improve on. All cause mortality is a completely different discussion - and yes, different countries do differently well.

But Covid is something we can and are supposed to be doing something about - so specific performance on covid is a very important topic - and not one to be ignored.

Nope im just being my grumpy christmassy self with gay abandon this year having not had to go to any christmas festive forced joy making things.

been to waitrose today and found some lovely chateaubriand. Got a sainsburys delivery on Sunday.
dont intend to go near any shops until after the xmas weekend.
