How have federal unions fared?
I know you cannot blame the EU but look at America, look at France, Italy and Spain. It is not really that hard is it?
Neither France, Italy or Spain are Federal states. They are all constitutionally unitary states. That is literally why Catalonia can't just leave. I'll tell you somewhere that is a federal state; Germany. And Canada, and Australia. But I guess they don't fit the narrative.
