I have always hated tft monitors, I got what was meant to be the best gaming tft at the time(Hitachi 12 ms thingy), and I took it back due to blurring when turning fast in CSS.

I really do want one but I am more than happy sticking with my CRT if it means the performance in games is as good as it is now.

There are TFT's out there that are 4ms now and I can't imagine they will give the same blurring that I once got, even ALdi have a 8ms TFT for 139.99 so I may give that a go.

Let me know asap before I spend my money on lube and cucumbers for when babs gets back.

ms ratings are complete bullshit, since they are all measured differently.

try before you buy, or get ready to return it.

Hey Tremzor!
Indeed, as Draylor says, rates speeds tend to be a load of co><. They're usually measured at lab conditions which more or less means ideal, so you'll never match that at home.
Imo an educated guess could be "ms x 3" for your real speed rating, but once again as Draylor says, try before you buy cos if it feels good then you won't care if the box it came in says 4ms or 8 or whatever.
I've personally got an Iiyama Prolite H481S (which you can read about here) and I think it's brilliant. Others on these forums have also gotten it, some on my recomendation, and I haven't heard any complaining (pfew :D). I don't notice ghosting or anything but I do have a system with the muscle to play at the monitor's native rez though (1280x1024) and when at that it's very crisp and sharp indeed.
8ms used to be like "teh uber fastor!!!1" but there are 4ms screens to be had as well. When getting one I'd say try and get one with the highest possible contrast you can find so you can pump up those colours as tft's tend to be a bit bland (imo). In fact, the first thing my gf said (when she noticed I'd bought something for the poota) was that the colours looked a bit pale in comparison to my crt. True indeed, but tbh some tweaking has got it pretty much as good as I can get it and I no longer even notice when playing the games.
Hope this helps!

Ohhhhh I don't know now. My brain is hurty from all the things I have to look for. I always thought the ms thing was what to go for.

I have a P4 3.2, 1024 ddr, Geforce 6800GT, will that set up allow me to run a TFT at the optimum resolution?

Thanks for the replies so far luvs.

I don't rightly know Tremsy. Your average 19" tft will have a native rez of 1280x1024 I guess, so if you run your CS at 1280x1024 *now* then you will be able to with a tft anyway.
If you run at less then a tft will "stretch" the rez to fit your screen, or show a black border around your visible area depending on how it's configured. The former will look less nice, the latter will not use a portion of your screen. It depends.

Perhaps one fo the lads here has such a card and a tft and can tell you for sure? I have a newer card (7800GT) so I can't compare properly for you :(

Trem,

I recently got a Digimate l-1918 TFT

MON-TFT-1918.jpg
from Aria for £162 and am quite happy with it.

Being Scottish I refuse to spend more than I have to .

For gaming, the fps is fairly low, but more than adequate.

Unless you're trying to save space, I don't see the point. My 19" Ilyama has been running for donkey's years, and still looks amazingly pin sharp.

I'm running a 6800GT, amd 3200+ - and a 19" Samsung 8ms TFT (recently bought after fighting with myself for a long time - I still don't like them much)
Very suprised and quite happy with it. The only noticable issue with the speed is in something stupidly fast paced like Q3 DM/RA3 - and I got used to it very quickly so I don't notice it now. You certainly won't get that in anything CS related. It's great in quake 4, COD2, hl2 etc, no slowdown whatsoever, I'm also running in 1280x1024 with no gameplay problems - all details ramped up to maximum.
Go for it, a step into the unknown is often the first into a long journey of happiness.

(Not sure if I just made that up or if I remember it subconciously from somewhere else)

Saves power, saves space, looks nicer, doesn't pump out heat. I've been using tft screens for gaming for 3-4 years now, and I've never really noticed any problems; advertised response times aren't that important, so long as its got a DVI connection, doesn't reflect, and the native resolution works with your graphics card (which shouldn't be a problem), then TFTs are fine. Obiviously not all screens are the same, but for gamers Iiyama and Viewsonic screens have a pretty good rep. Sony Xblack screens are good too, but way too expensive.

I have a last gen x-black, very nice screen! Got it for £100 off the sony website due to a pricing snafu, however LCD prices have dropped considerably since then, mine cost £450 new!

Go on get a new monitor! The only thing I'll say is that you certainly notice the difference between cheap LCD's and good one's, so you may want to spend a bit more than £140! Get something like the Samsung SM-913N, which is £200.

Heh, I got myself a Samsung 913N... played Q3, UT2004, no blurring whatsoever, and really great colors, only downside - no DVI, but I don't do any professional photo editing, so prolly doesn't matter.

Trem m8 TFT is shite for gaming still fgs :) Prolly wont be in another ,ooo 19 years, but at the moment it still is.
One of the things noticable about the people who have said they are good is that none of them appear to play CSS, or at least ive never seen em :)

I've played CSS on my Viewsonic. Looked purty. Unlike the people who play CSS...;)

I have a Viewsonic LCD monitor, and I melt face at CSS.

LCDs are fine for gaming, my old CRT was a 19" iiyama pro so you know what sort of monitor I was used to.

LCDs with DVI are the sex, no fucking around, response time advertising is liessssss, there are several ways to measure it, so of course some companies slap on the lowest and some use a fair response time. You need to check how its measured.

Any arguing and I will be more than happy to melt your face tremlar :D

My LCD is fantastic for gaming, and great for CS. Get one with high brightness and contrast, and DVI and you'll be fine.

I can help with that too, thread closed going a tad off topic :p

I recommend you go to a shop and try one out, or get one that you know you can take back to the shop if you don't like it.
