Everquest is not a bad game, it's just not a great game, if only for one reason: you have to spend a lot of time on it to really enjoy it after your newbie days.
EQ the first MMORPG I played and hell did it rule!! It was so much fun just to walk through the world and see what you could find. However, after a while you can't really find anything meaningful to do and you have to lvl up to see something new without getting smacked (you really, really don't want to die!). The game is still fun, but onl;y if you're willing to put a vast amount of time in to it to get where you need to be.
DAoC on the other hand is much more fun for those of us who don't have enough time with our beloved PC :D No farming is required to keep yourself adiquatly (sp?) equipped, finding a group were your likely to meet a challenge more interessting to rise to, than the groups health/mana pool dropping to low, or the odd dangerous spawn, is much easier, and on the whole people seem more friendly in DAoC.
If you've got the time EQ is good fun, there's so much to explore, but if you don't you'll feel a little lost. If you like to log in and have a laugh for half an hour or so DAoC is probably more fun.

but im not a hardcore eq player. i only play it for about 4-5 hours a week probably max. i dont have time for any more, but i still love playing it when i do play it. daoc is just plain sux.

I left EQ not too long ago after having played it for 2 years, so I'm beyond both the "I played EQ to lvl 4 and my god did it suck!" and the "EQ >>> j00 kkthx!!!!1" If you ask me, here are the pros and cons of both games (current versions!).

DAoC pros
- Nice environmental graphics, but a bit stereotypic, mainly because it's fairly realistic. Nice player models but poor faces.
- RvR is really great fun and very nicely implemented.
- Fairly fast char development if you group.
- Possible for many classes to solo even after the earliest levels.
- You can still RvR and sometimes xp even when you don't have a lot of time.
- Good quests with nice rewards also for low levels. Good quest system.
- Active, co-operative and mostly friendly RvR community.

DAoC/Excalibur cons
- Mob models are not very impressive. Re-used models across zones.
- xp'ing was not made very interesting and accordingly few people play DAoC for the xp'ing part. They're in it for the RvR. xp'ing turns into the necessary evil to get to the RvR part.
- General lack of content and zones/space/dungeons so far. Add to that the division in realms and you get even less as a player.
- Excalibur xp'ing zones are undercrowded, at least in Mid, making grouping difficult and levelling a lot slower than it has to be.
- The relative independence/solo ability of the classes is not just good news. It also means less social interaction overall.
- Virtually non-existent player market.

EQ pros
- Excellent user interface! It is fully customizable with XML. If you think it sucks, it's actually you who suck at customizing. You can even import your maps into it if you're crafty.
- Old zones have outdated graphics (bad), later expansion zones are as good as DAoC or better. Nice variation in the environment, each zone has its characteristics. Nice player models. Nice later mob models. Nice variation in mobs.
- While frustrating at times, xp'ing is still more fun, varied and complex than in DAoC.
- Very good on the content side. The game world is far bigger than in DAoC. Rich high level content.
- Great itemization (compare the EQ and DAoC section on Allakhazam.com), lots of quests.
- High level raiding can be both fun and challenging. That's what EQ players do instead of RvR'ing.
- Active and mostly friendly xp community.
- Very active player market. Possible to sell things over-night while afk through the Bazaar trader system.

EQ cons
- Slower levelling (makes the game last longer but it sure is frustrating).
- Most classes lose the ability to solo rather quickly and the few classes that can are often less attractive to groups and raids and are therefore often less happy still.
- The few PvP servers suck and were basically only added to cater for players migrating from UO early in EQ history. EQ is not a PvP game. No reason not to choose a pure PvE server.
- Often very time consuming xp'ing in high levels for most classes. If you get into an xp group in an attractive dungeon camp, you're expected to stay a while, since it took them 20 mins just to clear a path from camp to zone-out to come and get you.
- High level raiding is very time consuming. Clearing a raid zone can take many hours. Add to that sitting and waiting for needed classes to show up before raid. Top it off with a long and difficult corpse recovery after a complete raid wipeout and you'll have an EQ hangover the next morning for sure.
- Overcrowding in popular high level xp zones, since so many are high level these days.
- Very frustrating high level camps and quests. Quest bottle necks. Where a DAoC player spends days, an EQ player AND his guild mates spend weeks and make lots of enemies in the process in some cases (e.g. cleric epic).
- Un-cooperative raid community. Guilds compete for high-end raid zones and rare spawns. Server politics becomes a big issue in high levels.
- Apparently extremely addictive game. A disgruntled DAoC player gets bored with the game and simply quits. A disgruntled EQ player will trash his keyboard, shoot his dog, send a mail bomb to Verant Interactive, get a 'I hate EQ' tattoo, double-cancel his account to make a point, only to reactivate it a week later and continue playing his 40+ hrs/week.

Both games are different in the sense that EQ concentrates priority on the PvE aspect side of things while DAoC goes for PvP. Neither game is superior in both fields. I had played EQ on and off from May 2000 right up until early this year when I quit to pursue my interests in the imminent release of DAoC. Bisters' stolen most of my thunder with his assessment of EQ. What Bister didn't mention though was the econemy aspect of EQ. Players would meet up on a daily basis to raise money by selling and buying items. I would often spend some time wheeling and dealing like a proper Del Trotter. A problem I have with EQ not previously discussed is the lack of creativity during fighting for melee classes i.e. press the attack icon and that's it basically, hardly riverting stuff for a Warrior class.

fact of the matter is, you can and probably will play eq for far longer than you could play daoc, making eq a far superior game.

but anyway, uo owns both hands down.

Guess why people play EQ longer? Cause it's so fucking slow - you have to ignore everything else to get anywhere in it

Why are you playing EQ Karam, when you could be playing UO? It pwnz everything... :m00:
