No, I never heard of him either before I heard it on the news

He was the last surviving World War One combat veteran

BBC News - Last WWI combat veteran Claude Choules dies aged 110

110. Not a bad innings.

So mark down the date today.

5 May 2011. The first day when not a single person in the whole world has first hand experience or memory of fighting in the First World War.
Adds a new poignancy to the words "Never forget".

Today is the Dutch liberation day (for WWII actually).

Today, as I rode by,
I saw the brown leaves dropping from their tree
In a still afternoon,
When no wind whirled them whistling to the sky,
But thickly, silently,
They fell, like snowflakes wiping out the noon;
And wandered slowly thence
For thinking of a gallant multitude
Which now all withering lay,
Slain by no wind of age or pestilence,
But in their beauty strewed
Like snowflakes falling on the Flemish clay.

Rest in peace Claude Choules.

Rest in peace dude, and to the millions of others that died fighting for their countries, that never managed to reach a ripe old age of 110.

Wow, such a long life. Dieing when he had a "child" of 84 years, that's impressive. RIP

103 is impressive

Longevity is wierd. You can treat your body like a temple, work out 5 days a week, eat only healthy foods, and die from natural causes at 65. On the other side of the coin we've all heard of the old timers who smoke 40 a day for 80 years, and have a double whisky every night and live past 100. I don't think there's a secret. When your time's up, its up.

Is he really the last serviceman of The Great War? If so, then I agree it is very poignant.

Rest in peace.
