There are hundreds of nuclear powered sea vessels floating around already. What's the difference between one that uses the power for their own propulsion and one that uses the power for external use?

The Kursk sailed out to sea to perform an exercise of firing dummy torpedoes at Pyotr Velikiy, a Kirov class battlecruiser. On August 12, 2000 at 11:28 local time (07:28 UTC), the torpedoes were fired, but an explosion occurred soon after on Kursk. The only credible report to-date is that this was due to the failure and explosion of one of Kursk's new/developmental torpedoes. The chemical explosion blasted with the force of 100-250 kg of TNT and registered 2.2 on the Richter scale

Israeli intelligence searched for 18 years for the lost nuclear bomb, but were unable to detect it in the field as the soil was largely basalt-based and thus hid the radioactive signature of the decaying plutonium core.

The Druse farmer's son, a radical Muslim belonging to a terrorist organisation recovered the weapon in 1990.

Gunther Bock, a Nazi billionaire, and former member of Baader Meinhoff, funded the re-engineering of the weapon into a modern three-stage thermonuclear device. The weapon was placed into a cigarette vending machine and shipped to America where it was installed into the Denver football stadium which would host the Superbowl. Both the US President and his Chief of Staff would be at the game.

The bomb exploded and killed 300,000 civilians instantly.

America blamed the Soviets. The Soviets protested their innocence, but the US President, escaping the initial blast - barely - went to Defcon 1 and was seconds from launching a full-scale nuclear assault on the Soviets.

The catastrophe was stopped at the last second by the Deputy Director of Central Intelligence, Jack Ryan.

I'm well aware of that, I checked wiki before I posted it just incase.

My point about the kursk is that it points to bad seamanship on the part of the russians (seeing as the cause was reported as chemicals seeping through rusty torpedo housing).

That, coupled with the chernobyl fiasco - and thats what it was - leads me to believe that a nation who dont, or atleast didnt, have the know how/funding/etc to operate a nuclear reactor safely, and whom lack the same when it comes to seamanship, might make the idea of putting these two things together might be a bad idea. or at the very least highly ironic. Are you telling me you dont find this even slightly ironic?

Not only the US, but the UK had their problems aswell, like their Sellafield issues.

Sweden recently closed a few nuclear facilities after a certain test showed that problems could occur.

Three mile island imo shows the difference between the US and the russians.

As much as I hate the gung-ho american attitude, I'd prefer that to the stereotypical russian incompetence anyday.

The US prepared for such an incident, and that fact shows because of the way the accident turned out - 0 deaths, 0 injuries, and less radiation released than you'd normally get after half a dozen x-rays at hospital.

Things may have changed, but tbh I was mainly trying to point how ironic it was that the russians would be the ones to pioneer floating nuclear reactors after what happened.

Oh well.
