Just seen it.

Daniel Craig is a very good Bond. Not as smooth or sophisticated as his predecessors but much more brutal and "I'm a ruthless bastard" than you'd expect. A bit like Connery in Dr. No I thought.

Not as many gadgets either, no John Cleese being silly, no stupid invisible cars, no laser fights in space.

Its a bit on the long side, but theres less focus on the 'huge pyrotechnics display as evil mastermind fails', and more on character development and intricate plots. Oh, and its perfectly set up for a nice sequel.

It reminded me of Batman Returns in some respects. And theres a torture scene with some great one-liners :)

Batman Returns or Batman Begins? If the former - why?

Ah I meant Batman Begins with Christian Bale. Dark, gritty, angry - thats a bit like the new Bond.

Oh, and I'm sure I saw Richard Branson in an airport scene - watch out for him.

Seen it, love it.
One of the best Bonds.
Really takes us back to the begining, both plot wise and concept wise. The grittier, more ruthless bond gives real insight into the following films motivations.

Never been a huge Bond fan but this one does look interesting and all the reviews say it's bloody excellent.

Yup, I concur, just seen it and really enjoyed it.

Positives:

gritty, realistic (ish) good naturalistic stunts and action, good intricate plot and some emotion from Bond.

Negatives:

A little long, (poker scene was a little overlong and lots of people at the sidelines explaining Texas Hold 'em for the uninitiated) Thought the ending was a tiny bit anticlimactic.

But all-in-all, really good.

One thing, my Missus enjoyed it and she hates Bond films, and I heard some women saying they thought it was great as we were coming out, so I think the emotional drama and lack of gadgets has realy opened out this genre for teh wimmin...

Saw it today - agree with pretty much all that's been said here. You're right Tom - it is very similar in style to Batman Begins - a bit too similar actually. I think someone in charge said "Batman Begins went all real and hardcore - lets do that with Bond". Worked very well.

Anyone else think Judi Dench was pretty good too?

I love the "shaken or stirred?" "Do I look like someone who cares?". A nice little fuck you to the previous Bond's that were total bollocks I thought

Sorry to be a pedant nath but he said "do I look like I give a damn?"

I saw this last night and it was great. No more going back to smoothy shite and bollocksy cheesy jokes.

This was the way Fleming wrote bond originally and it's better.

Good film.

Very film noir in places, grim, dark, very little bullshit, no cheese. Plot was a little weak, it was a little long, but it set a new standard/level that I think will really freshen up the Bond franchise. Pierce Brosnan couldn't pull that film off (not now that he's made a couple with cheesey lines), Daniel Craig was pretty darn good; what a smashing physique he's obtained - that's what the gym 5 days a week and 8 months of training (from what i've read) does for you I suppose.

Bit of a product placement fest still (Sony and Ford brands), but I like that; I made sure my omega seamaster professional was on show :p .

Funny that CCTV footage was not stored on a scratchy VHS tape, but a Blu-ray disc that just so happened to be played back on a Sony Blu-ray player :)

I agree, although I thought Goldeneye was one of the best Bond films made.

Yes, I loved Goldeneye - that was quite a dark film too and Brosnan pulled off Bond really fucking well. However, it didn't quite work so well with the other Brosnan films (as in, they weren't as dark, were a bit cheesey, smarmy lines).

I hope Daniel Craig continues the darker persona.

Edit: Brosnan a lá Goldeneye could have done Casino Royale.

I didn't like Daniel Craig, then I did, then I didn't then I watched Layer Cake again and now I do. I want to see this Bond although no one comes close to Roger Moore, Sean Connery was about the worst Bond before anyone says anything

Well i saw it at the weekend, and i came away with the feeling of "Hmm"

I can't put my finger on what i thought was wrong with the film aside...most of it.

It just didn't play right in my mind, i found myself watching it through thinking "What have they done"

Maybe its Craig, maybe its the plot line..the film just left me very non fussed about it, no i can't be specific....i dont think i'll be getting this one on DVD like i do all the tohers.

That is fighting talk there sunny jim (well it would be if your weren't clearly harder than me).

I'm not sure if you'll like Daniel if Old Man Moore was your fav. Daniel has an undercurrent of psycho whereas Moore only had an undercurrent of piss from his alzheimers induced incontinence.

:D I love you.

Moore is my fav because he was Bond at the time when I was a boy and Bond was uber. He just had all that I think Bond needs, smooth, smarmy and clearly an alcoholic.

I think that Connery has been over rated in everything he has ever done, he was good in the Untouchables but even then he annoyed me, I just think hes a talentless wank.

Having said that Burt Reynolds is my hero.

Me thinks someone is a closet homosexual, it's 2006 burst out of that cupboard with spangles and multi-coloured clothing!

Almost had me until this. There hasn't been a really good bond film in fucking years and I thought Goldeneye was "average" at best.

Anyway - I'm in the "Han Shot First" camp with regards to this film. Bond has BLACK hair ;)

I haven't seen Casino Royale yet, but I WILL say that The Living Daylights was the best Bond film ever - and not just for the theme song. A complete lack of cheese, the best Bond car ever (Aston V8....dribble) and the funkiest key ring I have yet seen.

Everyone is going on about Daniel Craig being so dark & moody in Casino Royale, that's exactly how Dalton played the role and he got shafted go figure :(
