Car Problems

For the past few weeks, my Car (Vauxhall Astra G Reg Petrol) has started playing up.

When i travel at around 30/40mph in 3rd/4th Gear it starts to get very Sluggish. I mean sluggish as in, im "fighting" to stay above the Mark of what im travelling at.

Today when i went out (eep!) i travelled about 2miles, on a Road that starts off at 30mph, then later goes to 40mph, when i get to the 40mph area, my Car just cant handle it for some reason.

When i end up slowing down (Releasing Accelerator / Braking) my Car judders forward (Going at 30mph).

Its hard to explain i guess, but thats the first area of the problem.

Second area is travelling back from where ive been, i just pull up to Reverse into my Home but when i park up, then select 1st Gear to move forward a bit, the Car just wont budge, then i get a brief smell of Petrol so i shit myself and dont "force" it to move forward. I try Reversing but it just does the same, so my Car is now stuck on the road, unable to Reverse in and what have you.

I turn my Car off, but then i notice my it wont start up (Battery stuff?) so i pump on the accelerator until it starts up but it wont budge..

I get out the car, and kick it for being a bastard, go inside, tell my Mum, she says "oh theres nothing wrong with it", i give her the key and go "ok, you go and Reverse it in then".....

....

....

She fuckin reverses it in.. no problem from what i gather so im like ?!WTF?!..

Anyone got a clue? heh

Accelerator is the one on the far right

Brake is in the middle

Clutch is on the left

hope that helps :)

Any number of things really...blocked exhaust, something wrong with the clutch, blocked valves perhaps?

I dunno...I'm no car expert...

Best take it to the garage to get it fixed...

Carb icing up m8 now it's cold again... could be that if it's a carb'd engine... if it's injection then fook knows :)

If it's got a performance airfilter on, put the std on for the winter... some peeps spray WD40 on HT leads n plugs to stop moisture building up too. All ya can do if it gets arsey is let it rest for 5 mins then try again :)

Yer, if its modified I have no sympathy for you, leave the engine the wat it was built it works better that way.

Sounds like something seized up to me, gearbox oil, engine oil?

I always remember the story of the girl who drove to and from uni in her Citroen Dolly and it kept getting slower and slower and slower over the months until she could barely do 5mph so she pulled over called the AA.

They found the engine had exactly no oil in it and had seized tight

may also be dirt in the carburettor.

This would cause a slowdown as well.

Years ago I had a car that did exactly what you describe SG.
Fuel leak in the carb input line thingy.
Car caught fire at a set of traffic lights and destroyed itself in a most impressive blaze, until trumpton turned up and destroyed anything left with power tools, sledge hammers and sheer brute force.
Anyway, sounds like a fuel problem to me. Sounds like your flooding the thing, not enough air. Or something. Is it injection? Does it have an automatic choke that might be sticking? Does it have a carb thats got a sticking butterfly valve?

I once had the misfortune to have a car with a busted starter motor and the misfortune to be unable to afford a new one. So i got a replacement from a breakers yard.
And then another when that didnt work.
And then another.
When that didnt work I applied the science of violence and munted the fucker with an axe (the car bodywork that is). Made me feel so much better, but my mate nearly did himself an injury running away from the screaming psychotic axe-wielding monster.
In the end I used the axe on the starter motor and it fixed it. Sticking brushes I was told by a mechanic contemplating the destruction before him.

Hmmm, Ted.. when you first put Subscription up on Barrysworld, i went down to GAME in Warrington, and just as i got to some Traffic Lights my Car did pretty much the same as above, except that time, my Engine started smoking like fuck, so heres me in an Old Banger holding up traffic trying to get the smell of whatever it was away... truely scared me, i always have these imaginations of pressing the accelerator and it starts to go up in a Ball of Flames.

I've had the Car for about 16months, where i got it for like £500 from a Garage, my First Car so as you can imagine im pretty much confused and *scared* about the whole situation

Btw does it have a manual choke on it?

My Vauxhall was solid as a rock. Except for the fact I had to replace the gearbox. Twice. I blame my somewhat spirited driving at the time though to be honest. Had a slipping clutch when I sold it :)

As Ted has said, sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Although its feasible I suppose that a couple of your sparkplugs may be on their way out.

What Astra is it? GTE? SRi? other?

I got one of 'em SG, 1.6 zetec-s - pretty fast motor, great fun to drive, cheap to insure, great sporty look. You can pick 'em up quite cheap these days - i paid £6500 for mine and it was just under 2 years old. Not quite as quick as a Saxo VTS, but the fiesta has a much better chassis, air con and traction control. Oh, you'd also have to live it down that you own a citroen with dodgy french electrics.
