I'd also recommend caraudiodirect. Also check out their forums as many people are selling their second hand stuff, you can usually pick up a bargain or two.

Or...

Wait till March/April time next year, and go into your local Halfords..

Say to the Audio bloke/bird, "Hi, where's your nearest clearance store?".

If they look at you a bit funny, say you used to work for them.

You see they send all of last years stock to one store in each area, (20 areas in the UK), to sell off cheap. The best deals are on ex display stock, and they'll probably put together a good deal for you.

That's if you can wait that long.

Thats a good trick, do you know any other shops you can do this at?

Last time we were in the US (last year) I got a Clarion CD/minidisc player thing for my partners car.
Very spinky, and cheap to boot. :D

Although, it helps if youre in the States to bring it back, rather than importing. :(

Importing from outside Uk means that Customs and Excise will hit you with a VAT charge of 17.5% of the cost of the item along with an administration fee.

I dont know if the fee is fixed but I know of one person who was asked to pay about £3 admin fee for a bunch of DVDs

Well if it's only 17.5% v.a.t. that I'll be charged, seems like it's gonna be cheaper buying from the USA then...

I put the wrong link in the first post, check this out :)

More like 35%

Import duty is 17.5% and VAT is 17.5% - you pay both on all imports that are not "personal effects" (i.e. stuff you already own that you're bringing back from a country). Oh, and freight duty. I've just had to pay £240 for a set of wheels in import duty, tax and freight agent costs - mind you thats good considering they're worth well over £2000 and were declared for £250 :)

They were "used" apparently. ;)

You might get away with declaring it as a gift, so long as the other party is game. It's a risk though.

Yeah that's what I've heard as well... Either a gift or say it's 2nd hand. Thx for the info Durzel :)
