its all maggie thatchers fault :(

How could she possibly think that competition on the railways would work,
there are many things which competition can apply too but not the railways. this is for the simple fact that although its considered privatised and it was percieved that competition would have (passed tense) driven the betterment of the service essentially the rail orgainsations still have a monopoly on there stretch of track, with the only other options being the even more expensive buses or cars.
I belive there are a few tracks that have dual ownership but its no real deal, anyway you still have one operator owning the train timetable postions for the rush hours and the public just want to get there, they arent going to care which service they get on as long as it get them there. plus demand is relativly inelastic for the rail service so the rail companies can hike up rail fares knowing the'll only lose a relativly small amount of buisness. Its a Lose, lose situation for the consumer for the rail serivice to be privatised.

I think the trains should be taken over by Alton Towers. They tend to run their rides on time, have less accidents, go faster, are far more enjoyable and surprisingly smell of sick and piss less often.

I'd certainly choose rail more often if they did run it.

What pisses me off is that the government puts up like petrol prices and big fuel guzzling taxes and the like to encourage public transport, when public transport is shite. If i go by car there is minimal chance that I will make myself wait outside my car for an hour because the road is covered with the wrong kind of tarmac, there is a tiny chance I will sit in chewing gum, a small bizarre chance there will be a fat stranger sat in my seat, and sod all chance that I'll slam door shut and drive away just as I was going to get in my car.
