Only time I've had a mishap with Rail thingies recently was when my usual train was - according to the screen thingie - an hour late, and then it turned up 3 minutes early. Which is thoroughly bizarre, and utterly unwelcome, I didnt actually want to go in that day (I never do?)

I did'nt know there was a strike on....

do you secretly work on the trains.

Striking is'nt the allways the awnser. and the reason that the current lot are 'still' striking is'nt because the train company did'nt agree to up their wages. its because the train company did'nt revoke its discipliniry action on a train driver who was caught speeding and demoted to ticket collecter, if that is'nt wrong a wrong reason to strike then i dont know what is.

i was saying to daf that there was a rail strike so they wont be running normally , there wasnt one on the day we went. so dont insult unless you understand the situation , that'll get you flamed.

The stoppage follows the breakdown of talks between the RMT union and SWT over the week. The dispute is over pay and disciplinary action against a union activist.

Why because they want to earn more to provide for there family
everyone wants to provide for their family , but when your in a sector which is falling apart before your eyes and prices are already on the rise to fix poor tracks they want them yanked up to pay for themselves , cant they just wait 6 months for things to ease , and just carry on the talks not inconvienance millions , its not well planned and it wont help anyone not even themselves. all it does is lessen public support

fucking lol what a fantastic argument. "Just hang on 6 months lad, we might get round to sorting you out then. Trust us, eh?"

Do you actually earn a salary that supports you, or still live off mummy and daddy?

Of course, the fat cat management cannot be held to blame, otherwise they wouldn't be awarding themselves huge pay rises would they ;)

To do that, you would need to get a socialist party elected...hang on a second, who are these Labour people then?;)

Personally they nationlised Railtrak, and it worked better in the hands of the govermant before. and hell we are turning into a police state so why not

It didn't work better in Government hands. The whole reason the rail network was in such a shit state was because of government underfunding. The main reason there's been so much disruption of late is that Railtrack has been riiping up the shite old track and replacing it with shiny new stuff. Then when the job's almost done and Railtrack is still about to announce a 300 million profit the Steven Byers comes in and re-nationalises it, effectively nicking all the investment made so far.

Bloody p00p !

The man's right. The state of the network as it's being hyped did not happen over night, there's been decades of under investment as the recent report highlighted. RailTrack admittedly were slow to make substantial investment until after the Hatfield crash but since, they've been ripping up and placing new, nineteen to the dozen. The government are wading in like they've saved the day from the 'evil railtrack' but they're the ones who set the network on fire, ran away giggling and left RailTrack to pick up the pieces.

Renationalising or anything close to, will just further delay the development of a decent rail network of which, this country has been starved of for years, imo.

Railtrack only started "investment" once their valuable shareholders had been seen too and the track charges had been hiked up sufficiently. The track charges are paid by the rail operating companies who either hike up the fares or hike up the government subsidies to pay for it, any way you look at it the taxpayer was paying in the end.

I'm neither a fan for public or private ownership, but it does concern me that taxpayer money ends up in the hands of shareholders in a private company for doing b*gger all.

Prior to denationalization the old British Rail had actually got its act together, in fact, in order to promote privatization it was forced to run at a much greater operating return than any of the private companies who tendered the franchises. In all, BR was acually making a profit whilst investing and without compromising safety.

The idea that somehow the government "nicking" private investment seems to convieniently ignore the fact that the "shite old track" was publically owned in the first place, as was the acres of railway land given away with the deal which was sold off for a huge profit.

I dunno much about the politics of it all but I know what I experience first hand.
I've been getting the train to London from Canterbury for a year now and it's been getting worse and worse and worse.
The staff are a mixed bunch of right miserable bastards, friendly people or "people who always wanted to drive trains since they ere wee".
It's happened to me and I've seen it happen to to others where there train will leave as someone's actually running to get it, yelling for them to hold the train. Someone can be literally feet from the doors before the cunts close them and move off.
Then there's times where the guards will tell the driver to wait and deliberatly hold the train a minute or two so someone can get their ticket etc.

My point is that the rail service is run, on a public level, by normal people. I can totally see why people want a pay raise. I can also totally see why people are thinking "why the fuck should they get a pay raise for providing a shite service?".

I can't be arsed to look but someone said it correctly that striking does very little but lose public support. In the end either the protestors compromise or get feck all. It's what nearly always happens.

As someone who uses the trains for around 4.5hrs a day 5 days a week, I think my train's been on time about twice in the last two months. Every day it's at least ten minutes late.

All that plus the heating is either up full blast and everyone cooks or it's off and we all freeze while we're packed in like sardines.

Where do I point the finger of blame? The driver? The guards? The station attendendts? The fat cat bosses?
Seriously, I don't know and I'd like to know the answer so at least I can direct my frustrations somewhere. Can anyone help me out?

*edit...I didn't even mention the fares but I'll save that for another post.

BR wasn't investing enough obviously. Selling fromer BR stuff off cheaply is the Government of the day's fault not Railtrack's. They got the stuff and didn't need it. Wahey, who can blame them. Just cos the privatisation was done in a naff way by the Tory government doesn't give the Labour government any right to nick it back off thousands of shareholders.

privatisation was done in a naff way

The current issue is nothing to do with how Railtrack was originally privatised, the fact is that Railtrack was asking for increasing amounts of public subsidy year on year, it was to all intensive purposes a publically financed company, something that was not originally intended to happen.

The idea was to free public debt for ownership and maintenance of the railways. The public now have an under-invested, unsafe and badly run railway system and we are still paying for it.

At the end of the day the Railtrack management refused to budge, and the only way the government could effectively "sack" them was to wind up the company.

As for shareholders, if you invested in a company wholly dependent on government hand-outs then thats your fault, go bet on a horse with a wooden leg for a safer return.

They had to sell it on the basis that it would receive some subsidy for many years or they would have had to pay billions to tempt a company to run it. It could never be profitable AND bring the track up to date. The government never expected as much track would have to be ripped up but following high-profile rail disasters noone would go on a train unless they ripped up masses of it.

And no, I wouldn't be dumb enough to invest in such a company :)
