Laddey, its you're life.
You have to remember that although both your parents may have dreams as to what you might do, in the end you have to live your life.
However, I'd suggest, should you decide not to join the forces, that you break it to them gently, sit them down and explain why you're not doing it, and back up your reasons with what you're going to do instead. Ie, mum and dad i'm not going the army because of x y and z, but instead I have an army scholarship to go to uni and train to be a Dr.

As long as you're a productive member of society i'd have thought most parents would be proud.

Words of wisdom, I think i'll break it to my gf gently and tell her i'm going in. I'll be going in as a driver, get my HGV, LGV, ADR, etc. She's more likely to come off better with me if she sticks by me and tomorrow i'm going in to do my attenstation (my oath, swear on the queen etc) so it's judgement day. Well that solved that problem :)

If you think she'll be really upset, i'd sit her down and tell her, but allow plenty of time to chat about it, discuss any questions she has etc.

personally I'd have discussed and make sure it was ok with her a month or two ago, the day before you attestation sounds a little late tbh but hey :p
