Hang on a minute. Do I understand you correctly in saying that if you live too far from the local exchange, nobody will instal either ISDN or ADSL?
Why not?

They can istall ISDN in some instances, but not mine, i'm too far away from exchange (5.3km) and too much line noise/capacitance.

Dunno what the distance limit is for ISDN, and sometimes I think they use distance as an excuse when the line fails for other reasons.

All in all, I have no trust in BT, and am looking into alternatives, either Telewest (Blue Yonder) or Tele2 (not available til March 2001) which is wireless.

BT called me this afternoon at 5:00pm to tell me they didn't have any spare engineers available to install my aDSL. Mrs. Luap stayed in all day and is taking it out on me!

Because there's a maximum distance the signal can travel before it degrades. afaik it's a lot shorter for DSL than ISDN.

Still, I'm happy, my exchange is at the bottom of my road :)

Next year should see the introduction of a new DSL that will be able to travel over a greater distance.

"Should". The network will be an estimated 20-25% ADSL featured by mid next year. And that's not thinking about the teething problems they are bound to have. You'll be lucky to see an improved tech for a VERY long time yet (look how long they sat on ADSL).

Yes, but the local loop is supposed to be unbundled (whatever the smeg that means) next year innit.
Might change things a bit eh?

Then again....

Well, it's been about a month now since I've 'ordered' ADSL from BTOW and this is the progress so far:

1) Rang them up again, ordered BTOW, didn't get a installation date. The operator said that the application has been forwarded to the 'correct' department because I'm a HH user.

2) Sent them an Email to enquiries@btopenworld.com, pointing to a rather interesting article at Broadband-Help http://www.broadband-help.com/newsitem.asp?id=74 - Got a reply saying that "We're delighted to inform you that you can now confirm your order for BTopenworld by either calling 0800 085 0511 or by visiting our website - http://www.btopenworld.com ..."

3) I phones them, ordered BTOW, didn't get a installation date. The operator said that the application has been forwarded to the 'correct' department because I'm a HH user. I now ask who the 'correct' department was, to which the lady on the other side of the phone hesitantly replied 'Liam Burns'. Feels like Groundhog Day to anyone?!?

4) Progress in one month = 0%

5) Received my BT HH Phone bill for the month, a staggering £85!!!

6) I now know who I'm supposed to flame, cause my patience is wearing thin.

B.T?

Hey all,
i've read through all the posts & have 2 agree with most.
I'm a field engineer 4 B.T myself as well as a CS player,
& having spent 2 months configuring our local exchange 4
A.D.S.L.I Was gutted to find out that it would'nt be available for consumers 4 at least another 6 months......
Now i know that playing CS over a modem can be frustrating
(finally connecting & then getting kicked/or just dreadful ping...)So i figured i'd sign up with telewest......NOPE!
they don't cover our patch (yet).Same goes 4 N.T.L ....
So i'm stuck with I.S.D.N 4 now.
To be truthful i think that once A.D.S.L has rolled out
it will take a miracle to keep it running as the network is shagged !!!!
Too many shortcuts & hash jobs have seriously weakened a laboured frame & given a year or 2......i'll be amazed if it's even run by B.T
Take my advice & use telewest (cable).

Come on then - what's DSL actually like? Can you give us the pro's and con's so we can actually decide whether or not it's worth it! And what's the problem with Netmeeting? I've heard that it's not supported - ?
I don't know an awful lot about Openworld except the obvious speed claims etc..Does it spilt your line - ie is your regular telephone engaged when you're online etc.?

In the meantime I'm sticking to HH - bet my local exchange will be the last in the country to upgrade!

As for some of these phone bills - have u guys tried http://www.gotocall.co.uk/ ? I find if I use that combined with my free RHA connection - and £13 a month of free calls + the free minutes on my mobile (which I normally forget about)- I don't have much of a bill at all!
You've just gotta run your phone account as you would a business - tho' I haven't managed to finish a quarter in credit yet!

No, I bet I never even get HH where I live, let alone ADSL.

Umm! - Where's Ono gone? You see, now he's got Openworld he won't post in this forum just in case BT see it and cancel his connection :)

how about ntl world?????

you buy an adaptor (which incidently just dials four digits before the call on BT)

it will cost you 9.99 a month and you will have 24/7 access
and when i was using it (im ntl cable modem now) it was very speedy for a modem carrier.

email me on paulnesbitt@ntlworld.com for further info if ya need it!

I'm in the Lager Louts clan, and one of our members, Fost3rs used NTL world and for quite a while had 300+ms pings, which is not good. What were u getting?

Nothing unusual about that .... except I left the wankers and rejoined BT in JUNE! WO gave me loads of grief transferring back to BT and was glad to have got rid of them, now this!!!

Apparently they did this audit thing with BT and found that there was about £110 worth of call charges not billed to me dating back to March.

snip rant...

I to got a bill for 58 quid, not paid it, still on my desk at work. I've decided not to pay until I get my red bill ... considering they haven't sent it and I've had it for over a month, I think they are to embarrased to come and get it off me :)
