Title says it, i dropped my iPhone today and it cracked the screen quite badly. No insurance (yes i know!)

It lasted all of 3 months, which is not bad for me, as i gave it about 6 weeks b4 i fucked it

Does anyone know the best way to get it repaired, or should i just throw the fucking thing in the bin, cos i would happily go back to my old SE

Thanks

Ed

Well if you don't want it, I'll have it ;)

(reason being, it will cost about £20-30 for a decent replacement casing and fitting it takes a small screwdriver and some patience)

Take it the apple store and lie.

They'll swap it if you are convincing.

Just take it into any high street repairs shop and they'll charge about £25.

I believe that will invalidate the warrenty as they have to open the back still. That is why a lie is still his best option.

It dropped a short distance on to carpet, you are fucking pissed. Let apple know this.

Just watching a vid on youtube, looks easy actually, pretty straight forward. I'll give Apple a call tomorrow and see what they say, there is one in Basingstoke now.

Although i am being told its gonna be about £100, is this correct?

Yes, Apple charge around that much if they don't believe there is a fault, but you get the warranty.

Don't phone them, they'll not agree a swap on the phone. Use their website to book an appointment at the apple store (they don't let you just turn up), and then moan like hell about the shoddy build quality which cause a cracked screen from a small drop onto carpet. Walk out with a brand new iphone. Win.

Say the dink is from something else and stick to your story. Or say it cracked in your pocket.

Apple advertise it as shatterproof so take advantage of it.

you can get a replacement screen off fleabay for next to nothing. if you're even slightly handy, you can replace it yourself. so sayeth two friends of mine, both with iphonys, who both dropped them.

this actually gives me the idea that apple affectionados are a bit of the fumbly sort.

Don't try and do it yourself, I did that with my Ipod Touch. It's totally fucked now. If you mess it up after trying the repair guys won't touch it.

No insurance but after 3 months of buying it, warranty?

I've swapped the screen on a few Iphone 3, 3GS and 4's.

The 4 are by far the most straight forward but do require a bit of patience.

Don't cheap out and just get the glass cos you're putting yourself into a world of pain.

Make sure you get the whole screen assembly. As people here have said it will cost around 30 quid of ebay.

There's a ton of guides on you tube.

A good tip for easy replacement is to just loosen the screws down the inside rather than take them out.
Then when putting the screen back on, hold the phone on it's side and slide one side between these screws and their washers and repeat for the other side.

You'll see what I mean when you start. This saves a load of ball ache.

EDIT: Most times when you buy screens etc they'll include a small tool kit but be sure they do as the two screws to get into the phone are tiny star shaped ones and they'll be a bitch to get out without the proper tool.

And this is why people should have insurance for high cost handsets.
I still have my *original* gold insurance with O2. £5/month for complete replacement with £25 excess. The only reason it's still that price is because I've kept it going continuously since about 2005. :)

I'd suggest something like this:
Protect Your Bubble | Mobile Phone Insurance, iPhone Insurance & Gadget Insurance
It's worth considering.

No, iphone insurance is over priced, the excess is massive, and there are lots of things it does not cover.

His house insurance will already cover it, why pay a massive amount for an extra policy that costs more than repair?

I was going to say claim it on your house insurance. Like I did when Tilly dropped my laptop down the stairs.

Has anyone actually used ProtectYourBubble.com before? Are they any good?

I had that once a few years ago. A line of pixels died.

I sent my phone off. It took two months to get it back to me. They refused to give me a replacement in the meantime.

Great value service that was for a "gold" insurance policy. Quickly left O2, their customer services were utterly horrific all the way through.

£4/month to get insured on my Desire HD, £5/month if I cover loss, hardly seems that pricey.

and yet it's already covered on most home policies, so why are you wanting to spend extra?

How about that then?

I can take it to a local phone shop who will do it in about 2 hours for £99.00, but it viods the warranty

Or i have to book an appointment at the Apple store to see a 'Genius' who will tell me its broken, no doubt and then they fix it in store, warranty intact. They wouldn't give me a price over the phone, but apparently its £140.00

Or the guys who do our buisness contract can do it for £95.00. It has to go off to Apple for 5 days, (no phone for 5 days) and cos its a micro sim, i cant put it back in my old phone, but the warranty is still ok

You could probably make one with an old sim if you have one lying around.

dude, a mate of mine did his own phone which was much worse (really, it was shattered over the entire area). he womaned up and did it himself, with a new screen off the ineterpipes for 35 euros. you're a handy bunny, I'm sure you can swing it.
