I think what we really need in the uk are real life sentences that take those who cannot be rehabilitated off of the streets permanently.
Makes sense to me.
Plus jails that arent holiday camps for xbox playing drugees - why go to the far east for cheap labour when you could have a literally captive workforce - make prisons pay for themselves.
A lot do, or rather used to. Lack of investment and the emergence of private sector prisons has largely knackered this idea.
Plus stop paying prisoners - I mean wtf are we paying prisoners for? It just funds the smuggling in of drugs etc.
Here ends the Xmas rant![]()
Prisoners don't get paid cash, and they don't get paid that much either. A well paid job at my nick is about 8-10 quid a week. Virtually everything they earn will go on their canteen (snack food, toiletries, tobacco etc) or onto phone credit.
Family can send money in, but a prisoner is only allowed a certain amount of that per week. Take this away from them and you open a huge can of worms. It's far better to get them working and reward them for it.
As for drugs, there isnt a jail in the country that doesn't have them and stopping prisoners earning money won't cure the problem either because they don't actually use money to pay for drugs anyway.
The only way to stop drugs in jails is to stop incarcerating human beings.
