Secondly keeping people on death row for decades while they arse about with legal technicalities costs more than life in prison.

fixed for you :)

I used to buy my fish in Allington Lane.

In other news, Jamaica has just brought back Capital Punishment. But with 1,200 murders so far this year it's hardly surprising.

Won't make much difference. You need a better deterrant than execution.

QTF.

I work in the "system" with exactly the wankers you lot are arguing about.
Ok, enlighten me if you please and tell me exactly what one of these individuals gets as a standard day then?

go down for "life", out in 6 months for "good behaviour" ? *

*may be a slight exageration

A life sentence is life, you are still restricted by Licence after you have served a part of the sentence in a prison.

Fuck all and plenty of it.

As a rule of thumb, your average A cat will spend most of their time banged up (23 hours a day is not uncommon) with only their cell mate and a radio for company. They can have a tv but if they annoy the wing screws then they get busted down to basic regime and the tv goes.
Of course, if you're in there for something really nasty then the special secure unit beckons, which is another way of saying "solitary confinement".

Don't believe everything you read in the papers about jail life, however I would still rather do time in one of our jails than pretty much anywhere else.

Fair play Staz, however imho fuck letting any prisoner have any tv any fucking time at all tbh.

Maybe I'm a harsh **** but when it comes to inmates, I'd much rather that crappy old Labour mantra of "Education, Education, Education" was combined with "Compulsary for Cons, Compulsary for Cons, Compulsary for Cons" no lessons = no possibility of parole.

Things like USA's 3 strikes and you're out, except 3 strikes wouldn't be life it'd be end of life.

Meh, maybe I should be quiet.

I cant agree with taking anothers life I really can't it is just wrong in my view... I also find that people gleefully revelling in the loss of life quite abhorrent.

Before I get the ususal well how would you feel blah blah blah.. becareful I may already have been there and my point of view is the same... to take anothers life is the easy option and is wrong wrong wrong.. maybe try the forgiveness route.. all this is in my view of course.

some people are no better than animals. Look what happens when we try and rehabilitate all our criminals, yoni. The country falls to fucking pieces. If someone has murdered someone or commited some other very serious crime against society I personally think its right and just they get the chop. Either that or just put them all on some shitty island in the south pacific....

Given the circumstances of that video, I can't see anything wrong with what happened - it was self defence. I can see your point about revelling in the taking of life, but this guy raped her and clearly was trying again. Feeling a sense of satisfaction that he got shot is just human nature.

Whatever your opinion is, don't judge the people who do evil deeds for good reasons, they're the ones who protect you from the people who do evil deeds for evil reasons.

I maybe considered blinkered but if I was asked to shoot someone, electrocute someone etc etc etc for some abhorrent crime against someone else or me I know that I could not. Neither do I get any joy out of watching evil people die... it is the way I am...

If any of you can actually go out and kill in what could be considered cold blood then by all means revel in what you see... however in my eyes that makes you as bad as they are.

In self defence I would prefer to render them unconcious than kill them and I do not see a situation where I would be fighting in a war (I hate them too).

This line always gets me.

Seriously taking someones life is not the worst thing you can do to a person, just because you fear death does not make it the worst sin ever. Sentence some people to death and they'll probably look forward to it.

I have been studying Psychology recently - in particular what was once termed 'Psychopathic Personalities' or what is now known as Anti-social Personality Disorder.

The more I look into it the more I realised that nearly all the most serious crimes are comitted by people with this disorder. The sad thing is that such people are clearly identifiable from a fairly young age.

Their lack of empathy and short termist outlook means that many get in trouble with the law from an early age.

The problem with such people is theres no actual treatment - therapy does not work (which has lead to many being released from mental institutions in the uk since they can only hold those deemed 'treatable') and once they have murdered/raped etc. theres no way of rehabilitating them.

Many are intelligent individuals - certainly clever enough to fool parole boards with claims they feel sorry for their crimes (even though they are incapable of such feelings).

The UK has no sensible method for dealing with such folk - they tend to come in and out of prison until they do something that gets them life imprisonment.

If there was ever a group that would justify capital punishment these would be them however even in these extreme cases I dont think capital punishment is a practical solution.

People facing such a punishment would tie up the system to such an extent with appeals that it would end up cheaper imprisoning them for life.

(thats ignoring the massive moral questions and the horrors of appointing an executioner).

I think what we really need in the uk are real life sentences that take those who cannot be rehabilitated off of the streets permanently.

Plus jails that arent holiday camps for xbox playing drugees - why go to the far east for cheap labour when you could have a literally captive workforce - make prisons pay for themselves.

Plus stop paying prisoners - I mean wtf are we paying prisoners for? It just funds the smuggling in of drugs etc.

Here ends the Xmas rant :p

I'll admit I've done no research in to this, but I've not seen an argument against it. There must be something productive the prisoners could be doing with their bags of free* time.

*edit: just realised probably not the most appropriate word.

Agree with you there Rynnor.

When I was in the RAF I did a four month OOA in the Falklands, while I was there I was limited to 50mins internet usage a day depending on state of the network(they're still on dial up down there), a 20 min phone card every week, and letters could be sent and recieved 3 times a fortnight.
It was a 60 hour working week every week in some of the worst conditions I have ever or will ever see.
Before every supply ship arrived with food there was a noticable drop in menu choice, for example once my lunch consisted of beans and instant mash. And add to all that all we got was UHT milk led to some pretty miserable times :(

Now I know I volunteered for all that crap when I signed my name, but when you hear stories about prisoners on day visits, playstations and generally lounging around their cells doing drugs and complaining when they don't get paid, it gets a little disheartening.

While I was there I thought to myself, this place would make an excellent prison colony. A lot of work needs doing to the roads there and what better place for prisoners to earn their freedom again. It's a small island where you can die of exposure if you don't know what you're doing, it's population is mostly made up of military personal, who could escape.

Then I thought, well it won't happen because of their human rights, which disturbed me because it seems their rights come before mine.

I tend to think that such people are bred from our society. That they exist says quite a lot about our society.

You only have to watch Jeremy Kyle to see how many utterly fucking thick and hopeless some people are. Then you have to imagine them parenting children, and that doesn't include the ones who are fiddling their own kids.

the problem with capital punishment is where to draw the line.
a mass murderer with clear evidence (he/she taped their killings) and i would think yes maybe an option.
a drunk driver who killed someone with his car???

as long as society cannot agree to a rule for capital punishment i will be against it. even though it surprised me when i came to that conclusion.
