So what does everyone think of the new Routemaster then? Waste of money, or inspired design and worth every penny?

Personally, I think its great, and if £7.8m delivers something genuinely ground-breaking (and this seems to have been thought through, unlike fucking bendy buses) and helps keep London distinctive, then nice one Boris.

Seems ok - nothing can ever compare with the awful bendy buses - they constantly kill people and used to burst into flames a lot.

Saying that - my TFL friend looked at the new tube carriages that are coming in on the Victoria line and said they have a fraction of the seats because theres tons of Wheelchair spaces in every carriage (despite never seeing a wheelchair on the tube and I'm a Londoner lol).

Theres only a couple of stations on the network that have stair free access - its not exactly suitable for the disabled.

£300,000 (conjectured) for a noisy diesel behemoth driven by an immigrant with a poor command of English.

Its a bloody bus, there's nothing to get excited about.

It seems alot more sophisticated, I think, Tom. Yes they are alot more expensive but they set an example for enironmental stuff and look quite good, with a stylistic 'key' to make them unique to London... all in all I'm quite cool with them.

Anything the Tories do from now on in will be slated, people will forget the many MANY billions Labour spent on bullshit ideas and try and shit stir with the current leaders.

Its so obvious and boring it makes me puke.

Unlike the new buses London has got in recent times, this one seems like it actually will work. I'm not just referring to bendy buses btw, we had shit new buses before that, one's that had no windows that could open and the bloody heating on in the middle of summer.

The only good buses are the ones that hit low bridges, or fly off cliffs (ala Young Ones). The rest are just noisy smelly cyclist-murdering socialist communes that deserve nothing less than being driven into the sea.

Buses run all night, the tube doesn't. Buses go to more places than the tube. You need a combination of them for a good transport network. But a tube in summer is not nice.

Well thats a load of rubbish, in the last 5 years we have ran out some of the best buses in recent times, quieter and less polluting.

Go on one of green buses 141 for example and everytime the bus stops you will be convinced the driver has switched the engine off

We have some new buses on the 38 route i think that have fantastic aircon (well compared to the older buses anyway) The newer buses are also alot smoother to ride in and dont feel the road as much

oh and 300,000 a bus is actually a very good price arctic buses were over 250,000 a bus and lost millions a year from fare dodging

There are not enough of them Sparx, the problem was about 10 years ago when they started getting new buses. They were mainly shit and had awful ventilation, hell in summer - and there were too many of them.

Splurging lots of money on buses for Cockneys seems a bit out of order in the current climate. Maybe if it was only their tax money that paid for them...

I think its a great idea if it helps London keep some of its identity and charm.

But why the hell cant they do what Adelaide does and have buses running on natural gas with zero emissions.

And also why cant they do the Adelaide thing of your ticket is valid for 2 hours, costs less than £2.50 and can be used as many times as you like on any train, bus or tram in the city or out for those 2 hours.

Ya grumbling i know but we really need to get on the ball here in the uk when it comes to metro systems.

Cannot agree with this more. I have horrific memories of getting the bus during the tube strike at the height of summer.

Seeing as we are private companies that provide the bus service who tender the routes from TfL who get all the fares i'd say your tax money is pretty safe mate

In North London we have more new buses, well Arriva do anyway i cant really speak for the other companies

Actually the fair structure in London is fairer IMO. If you go over the price of a daily bus pass on your oyster, then it will only charge you the price of the pass, not each individual journey. £2.50 for 2 hours, or £4 for a whole day?

There's no such thing as a bus that runs on natural gas with zero emissions. :p

The oyster is actually great it allows locals to get transport at a reasonable price and less savvy tourists can pay normal fares ;)

Two staircases is retarded. Scrap a staircase, add a bus conductor and bring back the "hop on/off".

ahem the rear staircase is for hop on/hop off with a conductor. The front one is for when there is no conductor they can close it off and use as a regular bus.

These are the green buses we are using atm

London’s Eco Bus: “Another red bus going green for LONDON”

(the one in the pick is actually one of my companies, note the 141)

Gerrof! I sometimes catch the 141 - hope I'm not going to bump into you any time soon!!! :D

Actually, I only go from Bank to City Road, lazy cnut :)

I personally think the bus service has got better over the past 3-4 years, and investing in newer, lower emissions technology should keep it up to date.

I mostly use it from Turnpike Lane (where i live) to past clissold park where my mate lives :)

And 2 staircases is a great idea means for different times of the day money can be saved by not having 2 members of staff per bus when its not needed

Not everyone wants to use or can use the hop on/hop off so its the best of both worlds
