No hack, lots of them are region free though. If you are importing buy from Australia (depending on the state of the exchange rate, not great now with a shitty pound) they are in zone "b" which is the same as europe for coding.
I've stopped buying single discs now unless I see them for £12.99 or less, just wait for them to come into the 3 for 2 offers or 2 for £24 that are around these days, pretty much everyone has them on HMV, Play, Amazon, Zavvi and you can get brand new releases in most of them like Prince Caspian & Kung Foo Panda which where only released 1 or 2 weeks ago, just wait for the titles you want to be added, cheapest way to get blu-rays atm.
It's my first post here, so hi everyone and I promise to play nice.
For the best all-round bluray player, I'd say the PS3 every time. Because it's constantly kept updated, it can run all the additional features straight away. It's connected to the internet so you can use the BD-Live content that some titles come with (e.g. Ironman) and it runs multi-threaded titles like Blade Runner seamlessly.
Something that people seem to have overlooked is that you can use it as a media centre to play content from your PC. I use TVersity to transcode my video files and the PS3 automatically finds the media server and plays the videos on my HDTV. It does a good job of upscaling SD content and DVD films.
When you say TVersity, did you also have windows' media sharing on? my vista was being quite awkward trying to get my PS3 to see it properly, and I was forever getting those strange sharing protocol errors on the screen when I was trying to get the PS3 to actually play mp3s or movies. (ofc sometimes it would play flawlessly. perhaps it s the fact that it's going over wireless?)
deffo turn windows native (ie media player) media sharing off tdc. They both work over the same protocol and dont play nicely so choose which you want.
