always liked bikes, the tourers more than the Tupperware rocketships but never had the urge to buy one myself. Strange as I was brought up around them, my old man knew all the Angels around this way, and had a gang of bikers he was always out with.

Used to go to rallys in the side car of his Trummy, loved it.

He's had some beautys, a BSA gold star when i was a nipper. A Guzzi California, couple of Kwaks, a now cruises around on a Harley....Maybe its memories of him seriously wiping himself out and having pins and stuff put in his legs thats always put me off......

I tried really hard to find a Bandit 1200 that I was happy with but alas I failed. So I turned to Kawasaki again, I have always been a Kwak fan anyway and I have ended up with a 2005 Z750, the first fuel injected bike I have ever had and it is a different world, so smooth and wheres the bloody fuel tap!! Very very happy with it.

unlucky matey - shit happens. my mate failed his test first time round - needed to resit but he took extra lessons and swears it made him a better rider. his philosophy was that he wasnt ready to pass!

So this morning at 7.30 it's not raining, so I think I'll take my bike to work. I get me coat on, and me gloves and lid, remove the cover and start the bike. No worries.

The I realise I've left the D lock on the front wheel, so I turn off the bike, remove the keys and unlock the D lock.

Keys back in, hit the button. Wurrr. Wurrr. Battery flat. Thanks very much

It's a newish battery too, but the bike has one of those datatool alarms on it, and it's not been run for only a week, but that was enough to flatten the battery.

Bastard.


So, I look for me battery charger, no where to be seen. Someones "borrowed" it.

I've seen a Porsche tracker do similar. When the battery goes on that, you need another physical battery to attach to the car just to open the doors. I feel your pain Throd.

was out a run on Friday evening and broke down just off the main street in Prestwick.

Had to jump the bike when I originally set off and the whole thing died eventually in Prestwick

noticed on the way down the A77 that the needles on the speedo / rev counter kept bouncing down to 0 and back up.

This was a new battery installed about 3 weeks ago (after being trickle charged for the required 35 hours.

RAC called out and they measured the battery - around 9.4 volts which they say caused the problem.

Got the bike back and slapped on the trickle charger again - just measured the battery again and its up at 13.94 (at the moment)

could this be the battery not holding a charge or a problem with the alternator not re-charging the battery?

Yamaha Fazer 600 2003 model.

Currently trickle charging the old battery - Returning the new battery to the supplier - hoping that it IS the battery and not something else.

anyone got any suggestions?

Get a voltmeter and read the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running... should be around 14 volts if the alternator is charging correctly... at least I think so

Quite likely the issue isnt the battery, it's your bike.

As has been said, it's not what voltage the battery is showing when it's being charged that's the thing, it's when the bike is running.

If it's not making about 14 volts across the terminals with the bike running, it may well not be the battery thats at fault, I'd check the regulator/ rectifier as well.

Having said that, it could be the battery, particularly if it's a cheap one.

Under seat or side panel, or it may be built into the alternator, can't remember on those bikes. A manual is really needed I would suggest (and never a bad thing to have anyway!)

Thing is, if a battery is suspect it normally means it looses its charge too quick, so, it fails to start, but once you jump it or bump it, it's ok, and runs fine - while it's running - but when you stop and leave it for a bit it then fails to restart.

If you're riding the bike and it stops and there's no battery life thats normally a sign that the battery wasn't being charged by the bike. You have to imagine that the power in the battery is only used to start the bike. Once it's running the battery supplies electricity for the everything, but is simultaneously recharged by the alternator as you go along - think of it as a circle.

Having said that, fairly newish bikes like yours dont often have charging failures, its pretty unusual. Just check whether its charging and go from there.

went to check the bike armed with both old and new battery and a voltmeter.

plugged in the new battery and fired up the bike (started first time). at 2500 revs the voltmeter showed the charge rising till it topped at 14.2

old battery did the same - charge rose at 2,500 revs til about 13.8

left the bike off for a while with the volmeter still connected - reading barely dropped in the 30mins i monitored.

i still think it was the battery at fault so it went back today.

Was out riding today with the old battery - not a problem. started first time every time.

got a new battery and plugged it in - seems to be doing the trick.

old battery was getting a bit finnicky - put it in the garage on Thurs night and the battery died (wouldnt turn over)

went to it on Friday morning - first time start. old battery out, new one in - 70 mile run, no problems.
