What you want is a lovely hardware firewall, like mine.
Shame I need to turn in off to get any sort of direct connections working. If only IRC and ICQ were consistant in the ports they used, or I knew what the hell I was doing.

IRC is fine, it is just DCC connections that are the problem. It's a problem with my cheap-ass router.

iirc, 113 is for ident requests - which is not really what irc is about

113 is blocked at work, yet I can still connect to irc. I just have to wait 1min whilst the IRC server gives up trying to resolve my ident

the ports you need open for irc are 6660 - 6669

You'd be fine with just those

Yeah it does that with the XP firewall... Gives up after about 40seconds.

Apparently Win2K comes with its own firewall.

Any of you kind and helpful gentlemen care to enlighten me on the path/command which allows you to configure this firewall within Windows 2000.

Start -> settings -> Network & Dialup connections -> [[choose connection you want to adjust ]]

Properties -> [[ Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) ]] Properties

Advanced -> Options Tab -> [[ Select TCP/IP Filtering ]] -> Properties

mIRC > mIRC Options > DCC > Options

You can change the range there at 'DCC Ports'. Just change the range to like 1024 > 1028 and forward those ports to you mirc PC. Perp is correct with the ident requests. DCC wirks through my firewall now Ive done that.

a) not everyone will be able to get/install/maintain a hardwarefw
b) softwarefw's are only as 'poop' as they're coded. I use an openbsd based gateway running fw code and I assure you nobody and no thing will be on my network unless I want it to happen. For the average windows user something like zonealarm will suffice imo. As someone said earlier, one also needs to use ones brain heh. If userA insists on downloading boobies.txt.html.com.exe no firewall in the world will be able to protect them, if userA insists on running misconfigured ftp servers, shell access and other whatnots...it won't be the firewall that's to blame when their system gets invaded.

mIRC forums hold all sorts of info on problems. Even manage to find out why my mirc wasnt working with 2000 once. Then I found out on there I downloaded the 16bit version

what port do you set it to listen to? 59?
