*sigh*

Funnily enough, CJRavey and I used to call Buffy "Baywatch with fangs" which was before we watched it properly and realised it wasn't the case.

Sorry but Buffy and Angle just bored the shit out of me.

Some Vampires that know Kung-Fu beating people to death, and casting magic, while at Collage?

Yea "ok"

I'll rather watch columbo..

Err, the whole point of sci-fi and cult television is being able to suspend disbelief - to take the monsters, spaceships and aliens seriously and relate them to real-life. Red Dwarf can be boiled down to its basics and also looks shit to someone who doesn't know the depths of the show!

"I mean, it's set in space, which is stupid for a start, and there's a cat, but he's like, a man - yea...ok!"

Every show here is silly when you look at it like that.

"Magic and vampires are so silly, they're unrealistic, don't you know?"

pah

btw: I'm not on a Buffy rant again, I'm making a serious point about all cult television. Yes, I know that the aliens in Farscape are actually shitty puppets but it doesn't make me clever for knowing that or shutting my mind away from it for that reason.

Unsupported shit statements like that will get you banned again.

My love lies with quantum leap/red dwarf/first couple of next gen.

H2G2?

Why is it not HG2G?.. which, as it happens, makes infinitely more sense.

Red Dwarf is really good but it's not strictly Scifi; like 3rd Rock, it's more of a sitcom.

Aparently Sci Fi is now anything that people watch on tv, Buffy as sci fi, dear oh dear.

Just remembered another oldie I used to love, Joe 90.
Never been repeated on any of the Sky channels for some bizarre reason.

Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. That's what I thought anyway. although HG2G does make a little more sense :)

Nice to see this is one vendetta you're meaning to continue. One day you might fill me in on the source of this spite?

Scifi has come to mean including those shows in the fantasy and "cult" genre - why do you think SFX - A SCIENCE FICTION magazine (and apparently the world's biggest scifi publication), is the biggest devotee of Buffy?

And ffs, here you go with not knowing what you're actually talking about again. Buffy has featured an alien encounter, and numerous technological (realistic cyborgs, futuristic weaponry such as ice-rays and invisibility rays) mainstays of science fiction. So what's the problem? It's obvious. Your problem seems to be with me and every time I comment on this forum from now on you're no doubt going to add a snidey, cheap little remark a few posts afterwards. I'd love to know why. (Yes, and I anticipate your response of "it wasn't aimed at you" and frankly, that's bull.)

Xena, Charmed and Harry Potter also come under the "sci-fi" umbrella to an extent. I don't know why, maybe it's because the science in these shows is fiction. Demons can't exist in a scientific world and neither can magic, but all of these shows have built their own version of science which is true (and makes sense) within the world of the story, but stretched somewhat compared to reality.

Basically, what I think I mean to be getting at is that it's a dark time for shows that aren't based on reality. I think everyone on this forum probably appreciates inventive, daring tv which says things about us as people without having to be set in Albert Square or The Rovers Return so the rank and file can enjoy it. The general public tends to instantly dismiss cult stuff as silly and don't take it seriously - when geeks do it it's just insane. And sorry if I'm tarring anyone that doesn't deserve it with the geek brush but let's face it, we all are aren't we? ;)

Sci-fi, fantasy, cult. It's all the same. Complete fantasy, whether based in the future or the past it really is all the same. We could split heirs and argue over the exact definition for decades but the point is we should be together in our celebration of excellent make-believe television.

Like I said, it's going through a dark patch - no one wants to make good scifi TV anymore, good shows (Firefly, Odyssey 5) are getting canned while stuff like Andromeda continues, and all we can do is bitch at each other over really really silly stuff. Maybe if we were to stop judging shows / films / whatever so quickly ("It's got vampires in it, that's stupid" "Harry Potter is a dumb little kid, I don't want to read that") and open our minds a bit more then the whole genre would be in a better state. But no, all we want is another shitty Star Wars prequel. Well no, dammit I'm not happy about that. I want the BBC to make some decent Sci-fi (again).

Having said all that I am currently burning up with a fever and am probably talking complete monkey poo.

I'm so important that every post addressed to subjects I enjoy is a personal attack directed at me.

Get over yourself, seriously.

The fact that Sci Fi has been kicked into meaning virtually anything cult is so utterly depressing it hurts.

Science Fiction is that class of prose narrative treating of a situation that could not arise in the world we know, but which is hypothesized on the basis of some innovation in science or technology, or pseudo-technology, whether human or extra-terresial in origin.

Yes, it's just a coincidence that every time I post on any forum on here that there you are 2 or 3 posts later saying something tailored to insult me.

And as for you feeling pain that sci-fi has come to encompass cult, see my above post. Don't get angry about it or make stupid divisions. We all like the same stuff here. So what you don't like Buffy, we're still no doubt interested in the same kind of stuff, so don't let something as pissy as a definition come between people for no real reason. Please Scooba, let me be in your gang, I want to be popular.

Nah before you know it he'll be picking on your family, its what he does, but dont worry he'll only do that through PMs so that his chums wont actually see what a sad windbag he actually is :(

You've got to be pretty arrogant to take that as a personal attack, Jonny.

Like I said, Mank, it's either that or a very unlikely coincidence. It keeps happening, what else am I going to deduce?

One minute I say I vote for Buffy as best sci-fi, the next minute Scooba says something, which translated to it's purest form means "Your pick doesn't count, go away."

One of only many possible definitions yes. Not THE definition. And anyway, why can't interdimensional / demon technology count? Good, then in my opinion the best sci-fi series is Buffy. Good. Settled.

I don't like Joe 90. I didn't come on here saying how upset I was that shows with puppets could be considered sci-fi and that it shouldn't count (which would have been understandably considered by the person that said Joe 90 as a personal attack).

As Cat once said: I think everyones right :)

In its purest definition then i guess "sci fi" should mean fiction about science.

BUT I also agree with JD that in the vast majority of cases sci fi/fantasy/cult are lumped together -- by the fans aswell, as most who like one genre like the other. SFX, Dreamwatch etc cover them all.

And anyway its a far more interesting discussion if you include them all and discuss all shows rather than argue over definitions :)

I have put my favourites but its interesting reading others as it can remind me of shows, rekindle interest, or even give me new shows to look out for (yes I am a sad sci/fi/fantasy/cult geek ;) )
