Go for fedora imo.

there are many distributions out there, but the industry will typically use Red Hat Enterprise Server (and thats by the same people who do fedora) just run a fedora box in a VMWare session by using the FREE server product from vmware :)

You can learn most things from something like a Knoppix or Ubuntu Live CD. Means you don't need to install anything on your Windows box or get a second PC.

Personally, I use CentOS (a free, GPL-compliant port of Red Hat Enterprise Linux which releases alongside the Redhat-branded distro...currently 4.4) at work and I use Aurora Linux (port of Fedora Core to SPARC) at home.

I used tot like Fedora aswell, and ran it for quite a while (logical successor from the RedHat personal editions I used before that) but found they became progressively unstable and buggy, so now I've decided I'm going for something else. Thinking about Debian or Ubuntu. Ubuntu is based on debian, so probably very stable like Deb, but it's easier to set up, and I'm lazy :p

I'm afraid most of us that do use windows while we much rather be using linux are trapped because we must use windows to run certain programs. I'm studying for Engineer, and I need to run windows for CAD programs. I have very little choice on the matter unless Solid and Autodesk decide to port the programs to linux.

Id go over to Linux in a heartbeat if the programhouses started making Linux versions of popular programs and games and supported them in the same way as with Windows versions.

If you want to use linux as a everyday OS fedora gets my vote too as its kept mostly up to date
If you want garunteed reliability get http://www.ubuntu.com/ as a everyday OS, but dont expect the latest updates as they are tested thoroughly before being added to the release

If you want to learn linux get Debian
http://www.debian.org/
It is a command line interface and forces you to actually setup and understand linux,
i will give you a good reference link i have bookmarked at work tomorrow to get you started

Fedora teaches you near nothing on how the OS actually works as it is all hidden away, its pretty much like running through wizards in windows and the basic add/remove of things and claiming you know about windows

guessing the windows haters use duel OS and only use windows when they absolutely have to?

nothing wrong with windows XP really, firewall is crap and most of the bundled software isn't up to much. outlook, moviemaker, mediaplayer, messenger etc. as an OS its pretty nice and tidy though.

I am no linux fanboy or a anti-microsoft campaigner (other than microsoft patch day :< and when it is going wrong for no reason at all)
but i and people like me use linux for reliability, you can leave it on forever and it will chug away happily
windows on the other hand..

hmmm.... linux does your nut.....

nope... I've spinned that sentence to any meaning I could imagine, but I've got no frikkin' clue what you mean with it.
what nut are you talking about? almond? hazel?
And doing your nut.... what does that mean? Like, cracking it open so you can eat it? Or polishing it?

I still don't know exactly what you mean. Remember that for someone not natively speaking english, slang is probably quite enigmatic. I can't keep up with all kinds of slang talk around the world. Hell, I can't even keep up with the dozen types of dutch slang out there, and I live here.
I don't speak georgy or ebonic. there are hundreds of different slangs out there.

I now presume that you mean that it drives you crazy. But I don't know for sure.

I had an arguement with a ginger kid (yes - he was ginger) regarding linux vs. windows.

Bold = ginger kid
Non-bold = me

If the majority of our programs are Windows programs, why use Linux?
You can find alot of programs that replace those that we have on the systems at school.

Not every game/program format supports Linux.
Do we play games at school and second you get the programs that are made for linux.

Linux requires a good computer.
Now I definetely know that you have no idea what you are talking about. Most Linux Distributions run better on most pc's than windows has ever done.

A LOT of hardware manufactorers don't support Linux.
The hardware manufacturers don't support linux but the linux community makes good drivers for hardware in this category

Linux is a whole new interface, it isn't easy to learn and takes time.
It is pretty simple to work.

If Microsoft is already installed, why not keep it?
I'm not saying remove it, I'm saying install linux in a 'Dual-Boot' Situation.

---

So originally you said you wanted to reduce costs by using Linux, yet your prepared to buy Linux programs to replace the ones we already have?

Incurring more costs?

Now I definetely know that you have no idea what you are talking about. Most Linux Distributions run better on most pc's than windows has ever done.
If you use Basic Linux yes. It's the equivalent of us using basic Windows. To run a recent Linux version with all the features and latest gismos, along with the cool interface, you will need a relatively powerful computer. If you can run XP, you can prob run Linux with everything spruced up. XP can't run on a crappy comp.

The hardware manufacturers don't support linux but the linux community makes good drivers for hardware in this category.
So, now it's cost and time for Mr Walker when we already have Windows working perfectly well. Righto.

It is pretty simple to work.
For a kid with no life...

I'm not saying remove it, I'm saying install linux in a 'Dual-Boot' Situation.
Even bigger time loss...

And they're are your basic advantages and disadvantages for using Linux compared to Windows - if anyone cares xD

Considering I know pretty fuck all about Linux and picked some of the information up off the web - potentially he knows more than me.

Now fuck off! :D

The vast majority of linux based software is freely available off the net with no charge, the only software you typicaly have to pay for is industry stuff or for the support of such systems - which schools wouldnt use.

However. The idea of education is to prepare people for the outside world, which currently is dominated by microsoft. If I had a son at school I'd much rather he learned the basics of XP,2003 and Office than linux and openoffice.

If someone has learnt Linux im 100% certain that they will have no problems figuring out how to operate XP, and Openoffice has the same user structure as Office etc

I disagree, bring someone up on a linux interface (eg Gnome) then ask them to change the local admin password on an XP box, or turn on showing hidden files and they will be "duhhhhhhhhhhhh"

Ohh and ass for office - that was true, until Office 12 :) I hate microsoft as much as the next guy, i hate their overpriced software, the flaws and gripes with the software but we just have to live with it.

Bugz will consider me a huge nerd, but anyway, here goes nothing.

Gamah, get yourself either Fedora or SuSe. The new Fedora Core 6 has been released recently, yet I'd advice the Core 5, simply because he's faster (atm) than the 6.

For a beginning Linux user like yourself, the Fedora offers a Wiki that basically covers all 'noob' commands. (Btw, don't use the UI. Use the command line, you'll love it later.) And as the ginger kid said: Linux doesn't require a faster PC or whatever and most (if not all) programs for it are freely available on the net.

Or,

you can just order some free Kubuntu/Ubuntu CD's and try the Live version. Fun to play with, no risks involved. Easily installable and sets up dualboot quite by itself.

You got a point there, but the general public won't need to change the local admin password, or turn on or off "show hidden files".
90% of the windows users nowadays don't know that either.
All you learn on school (except IT etc ofcourse) is to open word or excel, open a browser and log on/off.

I mean, ask the general 19 year old with a browserwindow open to go to the tools menu. Quite likely you'll hear a long long pause...

Actually a very good coder friend of mine uses debian and swears by it.

He is fucking clueless about windows, he can't do anything cept install games and play them.

I know more about linux than he does windows. In fact all the techies i know knwo more about linux than their linux counterparts know about windows.

Most the windows bitching hails from 95/nt4 days and the gimps haven't learnt anything new so still bitch about something based on an 10 year old OS.
