there are many distributions out there, but the industry will typically use Red Hat Enterprise Server (and thats by the same people who do fedora) just run a fedora box in a VMWare session by using the FREE server product from vmware![]()

I'm afraid most of us that do use windows while we much rather be using linux are trapped because we must use windows to run certain programs. I'm studying for Engineer, and I need to run windows for CAD programs. I have very little choice on the matter unless Solid and Autodesk decide to port the programs to linux.Mojo said:At least i don't use the products i bitch about, unlike u gimpy linux users(or mostly wannbe linux users)
All linux ever did for me was err umm.......actually it didn't do anything, it just sat their claiming to be superior but wasn't.

If you want to use linux as a everyday OS fedora gets my vote too as its kept mostly up to dateGamah said:Can anyone recommend the best Linux client to get? Need to leanr the basics of Linux to put that on my C.V.
Thx
I am no linux fanboy or a anti-microsoft campaigner (other than microsoft patch day :< and when it is going wrong for no reason at all)Raven said:guessing the windows haters use duel OS and only use windows when they absolutely have to?
nothing wrong with windows XP really, firewall is crap and most of the bundled software isn't up to much. outlook, moviemaker, mediaplayer, messenger etc. as an OS its pretty nice and tidy though.
hmmm.... linux does your nut.....DocWolfe said:I use linux at work and it does my fucking nut.
I still don't know exactly what you mean. Remember that for someone not natively speaking english, slang is probably quite enigmatic. I can't keep up with all kinds of slang talk around the world. Hell, I can't even keep up with the dozen types of dutch slang out there, and I live here.DocWolfe said:nut is another word for head

Bugz said:You can find alot of programs that replace those that we have on the systems at school
So originally you said you wanted to reduce costs by using Linux, yet your prepared to buy Linux programs to replace the ones we already have?
Alan said:The vast majority of linux based software is freely available off the net with no charge, the only software you typicaly have to pay for is industry stuff or for the support of such systems - which schools wouldnt use.
However. The idea of education is to prepare people for the outside world, which currently is dominated by microsoft. If I had a son at school I'd much rather he learned the basics of XP,2003 and Office than linux and openoffice.
Fana said:If someone has learnt Linux im 100% certain that they will have no problems figuring out how to operate XP, and Openoffice has the same user structure as Office etc
You got a point there, but the general public won't need to change the local admin password, or turn on or off "show hidden files".Alan said:I disagree, bring someone up on a linux interface (eg Gnome) then ask them to change the local admin password on an XP box, or turn on showing hidden files and they will be "duhhhhhhhhhhhh"
Ohh and ass for office - that was true, until Office 12I hate microsoft as much as the next guy, i hate their overpriced software, the flaws and gripes with the software but we just have to live with it.
