very hard but i would have to say "deserter's songs" by mercury rev. just a brilliant piece of work.

but "ladies and gentlemen: we're floating in space" and "live at the royal albert hall" (that's the title, right?) by spiritualized, "loveless" by my bloody valentine, "ok computer" by radiohead and "what sound" by lamb deserves a mention as well.

Audioslave- Audioslave
Pink floyd- Wish you were here, yeah Dark side of the moon was the turning point, afterwards they just got better though I prefer wish you were here to the Division Bell.
Metallica- Ride the lightning or justice for all
Joe Satriani- Crystal planet or his new one super colossal

Ok not the best album ever, but in my opinion a few of the best ever too bloody many too choose from.

Apologies I'm slightly unhinged today - I'm sure the thread title read best album cover - hence the Storm Thorgerson stuff...

Best album ever however, thats a bit tougher to decide....

Pink Floyd - difficult to pick and choose - although Dark Side of the Moon is the seminal album and I like all of it, I don't like it as much as parts of Wish You Were Here, Atom Heart Mother, Umma Gumma and Meddle, but then there's parts of the aforementioned three albums that I really dislike, so its a tough one. Ideally it would be a mixture of all their albums - not so much a best-of, but a my-favourites. And preferably with some of the boring bits of the songs cut out - my attention span is diminishing with age, and although the last 2 minutes of Saucerful of Secrets is mind blowing, the first 7 minutes is complete bollocks.

Hmm what else? Metallica S&M would have to be in there - partly because of the songs themselves, but also partly because of the way they're played - they go brilliantly with a symphony orchestra.

And...Faith No More - again similar to the Pink Floyd thing - moments of pure brilliance interspersed with parts of utter shite, but The Real Thing would have to be the Dark Side of the Moon equivalent.

And Dire Straits Alchemy - again one of the best live bands so have to go for the live version rather than the album version - the very beginning of Tunnel of Love (technically the end of Two Young Lovers I think) is just awesome.

Thus ends Ellie's analysis of her favourite prog rock.

Are you serious? Fair enough...

The Eurovision thing by the way; it's not there to pit the best bands of each country against each other. It's designed to place cheesy shit that everyone can laugh at in the same building. If people wanted to win, they'd line up the best bands they had out there...having said that, some European countries won't have anything better.

yea I dont think Dark Side contained there best works, but as the album was a turning point for Pink Floyd and encapsulated the feelings of society at the time I have to give it the vote for best album :)

Echoes is still my fave Floyd track :)

Wish You Were Here is the best Pink Floyd Album and their best song by a very long chalk.
Ten by Pearl Jam (Pearl Jam >>> Nirvana)
Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death by Dead Kennedys
Empires by VNV Nation
Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche
Elizium by Fields of the Nephilim
Superunknown by Soundgarden
Licensed to Ill by Beastie Boys
Levelling the Land by The Levellers

All were the soundtrack to a very mis-spent youth....
