Well, my parents just got a new digital box and widescreen tv and I'm popping home this weekend to check them out.

I just wondered what the general feeling was on packaged channels?

Are peeps here advocates of Sky or NTL? etc...

Sky is better than cable TBH, more channels anyway and a better price

Bah, cable prices have the cost of a standard line rental included.

Picture quality is slightly lower, due to the different compression format used. You'll only notice on very dark pictures though.

I actually sold my soul to a flatmate 5 years ago, in return for him cleaning up the kitchen. I'm hoping that being a priest will make up for this.

I got this one too.

And no, being a priest won't help.

oooh. If you work for Telewest in Edinburgh @ South Gyle - I can see your office from my office window.

Actually I'm at South Gyle sometimes too :)

Although since I have your soul anyway it's not a big deal.

The only channels I rate on Digital TV are:

History channel
Discovery channel (occasionally good)
National Geographic

Basically, the best tv in this country is to be found on BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4, C5.

I have Telewest digital and its pretty shite tbh. Didn't work properly for the first 3 months either. Only a couple of channels worth watching that others have already mentioned. I only have it as I cant get normal tv where I am.

Makes a sad point about the state of television.

No Im over the tracks at Sighthill.

Basically from the front of your office. Look over the railway tracks and my office is the 3 storey block behind the Volvo/Lotus garage.

/me waves out of window.

Remove C5 and ITV from that list and add BBC3 and I think you are spot on.

C5 are making some good documentaries now, although they still buy in much of their programming. ITV make some damn good dramas.

Anybody who doubts the quality of terrestrial broadcasting in this country should check out the TV in other countries.

America - crap tv adverts every 5 minutes
Europe - crap tv (mostly gameshows/talkshows), with advertising breaks lasting 6 minutes
Asia - don't even go there
Scandanavia - mostly dubbed english programming

Ok, so there are still too many docusoaps, etc, but if you look at the tv schedule on any night, you will find a very good range of programming to suit most peoples tastes. My only gripes with tv in Britain right now are the amount of advertising that tries to make men look like loveable idiots, and the amount of women-oriented tv programmes.
