Mixed opinions myself - yeah it was naughty , out of order etc - but to be honest I am sick of fucking namby pamby footballers rolling around like they have been shot everytime someone gets within 5yards of them - its ruining/ruined the game over the last few years.

I think for all the money they are on and for all the fannying about they have been doing it should be a proper manly free for all - no red or yellow cards, 90minutes, most goals or last man standing wins - bit of rollerball on grass type thing - maybe throw a few sneaky land mines in on the pitch as well - now that would get some respect back into football!!

Football is a game where you use your feet, what Thatcher did was ten times worse than the Keane incident, he smashed the fella in the head with a directed elbow blow at pace. It caused a seizure in the guy and there is no way of knowing if any long term damage has been done at this point.

Yes it has but this is one of them where the guy is clearly hurt , he wasnt looking for a freekick or whatever , hes been elbowed in the face running at full speed and you think hes dived? lol

This isnt the 1st time thatcher has done something like this , i remember what he did to nicky summerby , hes nothing but an arsehole really and he should be given a hefty ban.

I dont believe he should face criminal charges for it though , what happens on the pitch should be dealt with by the FA in my opinion.

you can hardly say this is a case of the footballer play acting he's hurt. Mendes was knocked unconcious, had to be given oxygen on the sidelines and spent the night in hospital.

Thatcher should be banned for life, as should anyone else commiting such a reckless attack. There was no attempt on his part to even consider thinking about the possibility that he might attempt to go for the ball.

It wasnt all that long ago that Duncan Ferguson was locked up for 6 months (or somnething near that) for headbutting a player when he was playing for Rangers. I can see no reason why Thatcher shouldnt be given the same treatment.

This was a disgusting assault on the player. There was clear intent to play the opponent not the ball. Everytime i watched the reply it looks worse. You can clearly see him looking up for where the guy was seconds before the elbow was thrown. Full speed or not, that was no accident. It cant even be classed as a challange, let alone a tackle.

Guy has a neuroligist(sp) saying he wants to keep him under inspection for a week at least, that is how bad the contact was.

If i remember right wasnt it jsut this summer that thatcher also punctured a chinese players lung in a "friendly" pre season game?

And the reason FA can't do anything, is that the referee actually saw the accident and decided that it wasen't worse than a yellow card. It's the same in Denmark, we went crazy oevr some shit on the field once, but the DBU(danish FA) could do nothing as the referee had already done something :|

I didnt mean Mendes faked it but there is a lot of it going around.

Roy Keane's tackle on Alfie was equally as bad if not worse simply because it was premeditated regardess of it being a foot - just because he wasnt severley injured doesnt mean he couldnt have been - could have ended his career at least - I doubt Thatchers was intended in so much as he didnt sit there before the game thinking about fucking Mendes up - he simply nailed the dude on the spur of the moment opportunity - he likes to try and have a "hardman" image (which is bollox tbh more like a thug), albeit it was awful etc there are a lot of naughty things go on that no-one ever gets on the high horse about - Shearer kicking ?? (cant remember his name atm) in the head - you cant say kicking someone clean in the head is any less nasty.

I know someone who was killed by a single blow to the head - he was knocked out and fell and cracked his head on the pavement and died. This can happen - its a freak event - the lad didnt go out to kill him, neither did Thatcher try to kill Mendes - I think he simply went in hard, probably a lot harder than he intended in some respects but I really doubt he was intent on maiming him.

I am not defending Thatcher in any way and he deserves what he gets tbh but shit like this has happened before - shearer/keano etc and it gets pushed under the carpet if they are a prize asswet to the club but if they aint they get pilloried by everyone - Hartson booting Berkovic in the head in training is another one - all as bad/worse than Thatcher.

Anyways they are grown men on 20k+ a week - in my mind that should mean they should get swords n shields n fight it out like gladiators!
