I've heard that creating the world in 7 days thing actually is a miss translation into modern language, as the word they translate day actually isn't a day, but a period of time, that is the world was created in 7 periods of time according to the bible

and I still don't believe in god btw

and im not saying you or anyone else has to....just ask you not to keep bashing my beliefs as i dont try to influence your just justify mine:)

Im confused - I was merely pointing out that theres some good points to religion, such as charity work. How did this come to "the atheists are better people"?

lol, it's just me messing with you by slipping things in there. :)

But it is true! :p

The thing is religious people get owned in most arguments based on reason, they typically go one of 2 ways when there incredibly weak arguments fail them.

They may put the onus onto science to disprove god, which a fair number of people including those on this board think is a major cop out a cop out only afforded to religion. (and it is a huge pisstakingly large cop out)

The other route out for them is to say that faith makes them a good person, "I do good things because of god" (or fear of) and if we all loved god then the world would be a great place yada yada yada.

So if faith makes them good, that suggest lack of faith would make them not good, and essentially by their own admission they are doing good things only because of god, or fear of or love for (not for the people they help).

You don't need religion to be good, to say so is complete crap to suggest that people should be grateful to a given god because some religious charity worker handed them some soup or a clean needle is taking the piss out of common sense and reason.

Thank the person not the God, give people credit not Gods.
IMO, OFC

I didnt go to an orphanage in Kenya because I was "commanded" to, but because I wanted to help out and make a difference to people's lives, to open my eyes to real poverty and to put how I feel about third-world poverty into action. It just so happens that my faith teaches the same as a feel when it comes to those less fortunate than me. I would say I was "doing God's work" but I did it of my own free will =)

Whats the point of this thread ? People will believe whatever they want to for whatever reasons seem best to them.

You have no more right to jam down born-again Christianity down my neck then I have of trying to convince you there is no God, that science is supreme, or that there are 260 trillion alien life forms in the universe.

Believe in what the heck you want to. All the best.

It's not PC crap thanks.

It's called common decency and if you ever happened to have bothered reading the CoC you'd realise that comments like that aren't appreciated on this board.

If someone is religious on this board, you're welcome to discuss your views in a constructive manner with decent posts with some thought put into them giving your reasoning for not believing in it yourself, if you're just going to say "Oh I think all religious believers are fucking idiots" then you can bloody well fuck off elsewhere and say it. NOT HERE.

Well arent they ignorant then? Would you "discuss your views in a constructive manner" with someone who believes in easter bunny or santa claus? No you wouldnt. So why should it be any different with religion? Afterall whats the difference? (there is none)

Religion is stupidity and ignorance. The harmful kind too.

The fact that you can't see the difference between the easter bunny and God just shows you're the ignorant one. You don't even know what you're talking about. (I'm an atheist myself.)

It's more or less clear what the easter bunny: a bunny that brings easter eggs once a year. It's absolutely not clear what God is, there are a lot of different views in different religions. There's also the fact that believing in God is possibly (probably?) a different kind of believing than believing in the easter bunny.

Well the thread lasted a couple of posts before going off topic.....but then again, we're in the off-topic section so going off topic about a topic is bound to happen!

/em awaits the thread closure.

I'll repeat the question. How are they different?

Actually if you think about it, they're very much alike

All of them are stories that are made to make people live their life in a certain way. If you dont behave well, you dont get gifts. If you dont live your life like a good christian, you dont get to go to heaven. Ok that doesnt apply to easter bunny but you get the point -,- (He does visit naughty boys too right? :()

Also, they have absolutely no evidence to back them up.

NONE!

We're not discussing the hippiedingdong versions of faith. The majority of believers believe in the God thats in the bible who will kill you if you live in a city where men hump eachother. Perhaps they dont believe in what the bible says (gays are sinners etc) but the concept of God is the same as it is in the bible.

No one cares what some wannabesmartboy hippie thinks God is ;o

Seriously man, there is a time and place for everything and here is not it. The best way to make yourself look silly is to claim to be an expert on something, and then display such ignorance that would put you in danger of no one ever taking you seriously.... Guess what you just did?
