Right, I've noticed some of you going on about this, and Neocron has just crashed on me for about the 20th time today, so Im bored and fancy something different. What's it like? And is it still in beta, or retail?

Currently demo only, but it's still the most fun I've had since the old days of AQ.

www.battlefield1942.ea.com for the details, grab the demo off the BW ftp then come and play with us.

hm. Downloaded, installed... crashes. Looks like some sort of DX initiation error or something. Double click the icon, swaps to black for an instant, then dumps back to desktop, remnants of the window it attempted to create quickly disappearing. Ah well.

Summo you're not trying to tell the newbie that he's posted in the wrong forum now are you...? :)

Heh. I tried to write it so it wouldn't sound like that. To show good faith I found this for you:
Q: Why does the demo crash to the desktop when I try to load the map?
A: This is caused by a bug where your video card accelerates vertex shaders in its drivers, to fix it go into your main demo folder then go into the settings folder, open up VideoDefault.con in WordPad and add the line renderer.hWProgramableTransformEnabled 0
to the end, save and exit, 90% of your crashing problems should be fixed.
Come play!

Interesting. It's not when I load the map, but the entire app, but I'll try this out to see if it works. Don't think it's a driver issue, I'm using latest (30.82?) official detonators.

Seems to be a very flakey/particular bit of software w/r hardware requirements... sounds like half the people won't be able to play it when it's retail.

Does this mean I have to buy a BW subscription now then? :/

On a wider point - I need to set my graphics card up for an FPS again. I've changed all the settings to reflect the games I currently play (ie where frames per second are irrelevant, so max quality with everything). What sort of performance hit does Anistropic filtering (2x? 4x? 8x?) likely to give me? And am I ok leaving any sort of AA on? No Antialiasing looks hideous after getting used to 8x.

As the game stands, the netcode is more likely to get you before your FPS ever becomes a problem.

Personally I'd set quality as high as you can and only start worrying about FPS when it becomes apparent.

Naff all. I have 4x AA forced on all the time now and there's no performance hit as this is entirely a GPU-side process. FPS is reliant on CPU more than the power of your graphics card. Provided your card is up to the job (and I'm sure it is), leave AA on.

That looks like my Quake3, but with lower gamma.

hmmm, image actually looks like an issue with DirectX* more than your graphics card drivers.

maybe re-install latest version of DirectX and see how it works? if not then only other thing i can say is invest in a Geforce card :)

* I was bored one day and tried to play a DirectX FPS game on an S3 Virge DX, using DirectX Hardware mode...

Tried Summo's fix, no joy, does the same thing. Wierd that DXDiag reports no problems etc. No doubt installing an older driver set will fix it, but I really can't be assed at the moment. Anyone else using a 4600 with 30.82s?

I think it would just update in a Windows Update. Windows Update even offers me up to date drivers now.

Try the BW server, Stu. No lag whatsoever.
